Vintage Down Couch For Sale on 1stDibs

Find many varieties of an authentic vintage down couch available at 1stDibs. A vintage down couch — often made from down, fabric and wood — can elevate any home. Your living room may not be complete without a vintage down couch — find older editions for sale from the 20th Century and newer versions made as recently as the 20th Century. A vintage down couch made by Mid-Century Modern designers — as well as those associated with Modern — is very popular. Baker Furniture Company, Børge Mogensen and Edward Wormley each produced at least one beautiful vintage down couch that is worth considering.

How Much is a Vintage Down Couch?

Prices for a vintage down couch can differ depending upon size, time period and other attributes — at 1stDibs, they begin at $1 and can go as high as $33,500, while the average can fetch as much as $4,500.

Finding the Right seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Vintage Down Couch
  • 1stDibs ExpertJune 15, 2023
To tell if a couch is vintage, examine its frame and cushions for tags, labels, and stamps that provide information about the maker. In some cases, the date of manufacturing may appear on these identifying markers. If not, research the manufacturer's name using trusted online resources to get an estimate of its age. Any couch that is 20 or more years old would be considered vintage. Sofas that are 100 years of age or older are antiques. Find a collection of antique, vintage and contemporary couches on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMay 3, 2024
A studio couch is a multifunctional sofa often used in small spaces, such as single-room studio apartments. It usually features a backless design and an adjustable frame. By sliding the frame, a user can convert the sofa into a double bed, so they can sit and sleep on a single piece of furniture. Find a large selection of sofas on 1stDibs.

A modular couch differs from traditional couches in that they comprise a series of various moveable sections called modules. They generally include a wide range of options such as moveable arm pieces or chaises longues. These couches offer great flexibility as you can set each module according to your needs. Find a collection of antique and vintage modular couches on 1stDibs today.

The terms “cloud couch” or “cloud sofa” may refer to two specific designs — Restoration Hardware‘s Cloud Sofa is a plush white sofa with no hard edges and an oversized seat upholstered with goose-down stuffing. The other design known by this name is Adrian Pearsall’s low-profile Cloud sofa, one of the contributions to mid-century modern furniture design for which Pearsall is recognized today and among the initial concepts for Craft Associates, the now-legendary furniture company he founded. On 1stDibs, you will find a collection of antique, vintage, and contemporary sofas from some of the world’s top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 26, 2021
A chaise is different from a couch or sofa. A comfortable common ground between sofas and daybeds, early iterations of chaise longues were discovered in Ancient Egypt and were later frequently used in both Greece and Rome. The chaise longue is based on a modern French design and is also known as a chaise lounge. This low reclining seat, known in English as a "long chair," has an elongated design with a low back that reaches about half the length of the furniture, allowing a sitter to put their feet up and relax. Shop a range of antique and modern chaise longues and sofas from top sellers and makers around the world.

There is no single longest-lasting couch. Many makers produce couches capable of standing the test of time when cared for properly. Generally, some signs of a durable couch include quality full-grain or top-grain leather upholstery, sturdy frame construction and high-quality fill such as spring systems or high-density premium foams. Explore a diverse assortment of couches on 1stDibs.

A single couch may also be called a settee. It is a long seat made for more than one person. Settees are typically small seats that can fit two or more people, but they aren’t as wide as couches or sofas. A settee is more intimate and offers more sitting room than an armchair. Settees often have a backrest for optimal support and are frequently upholstered. On 1stDibs, shop a range of antique and vintage sofas and settees today.

A half couch is also called a chaise lounge. It is an upholstered sofa in the shape of a chair that is long enough to support the legs. They are more compact and work beautifully when styled with a footstool or accent armchair in a larger space, but look equally stylish standing on their own. 1stDibs sells different types of half couches ranging from antique and vintage to new and contemporary.

To measure a curved couch, first measure the depth from the front to the back and the height from the floor to the top. For length, place the tape measure in one back corner and then extend all the way across to the other back corner. You may also wish to measure the width of the opening, working from the front left inner corner to the right inner corner. On 1stDibs, shop a selection of curved couches.
