William Sheppard

William H. C. Sheppard lived primarily in Philadelphia, where he was a student of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, but also studied in Paris as a student at the Academie Julian with Gustave Bouguereau and the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts with Jean-Leon Gerome. His work has been on exhibition in the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts annual in 1890–92, 1896–1902 and 1930–34, Paris Salon in 1899, Salons of America in 1934, American Artists Professional League in 1939–40, Currier Gallery Art, Cape May, New Jersey in 1946–51 and the Terry Art Institute, 1951.

Tuscan painter Daniele da Volterra was famously hired to paint fig leaves over the most exposed figures of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. While freedom of expression for artists has expanded significantly since then, prudish censorship persists when it comes to Renaissance nudity.
