A large and magnificently decorated Japanese lacquer document box, ryoshibako, signed Umeboshi/Baikyo, late Edo or early Meiji Period, mid 19th century, Japan.
The large document box, ryoshibako, of tall, rectangular shape with rounded corners, and fitted with an inrobuta (flush-fitting) cover with beveled edges. The exterior of this exquisite box is decorated all over with fifteen different raised reserves shaped as uchiwa (paddle) fans against a lush and intricate krikane ground imitating shagreen.
The uchiwa shaped reserves all of takamaki-e, and exquisitely painted with designs of animals, flowers, and landscapes in silver, gold, maki-e, hiramaki-e, and takamaki-e, with kirikane, nashiji, and polychrome embellishments, upon gold lacquer fudame grounds.
The interior of the lid is nothing short of spectacular, featuring a large design of a magnificent and beautifully detailed rooster and hen with chicks gathered around a lazy stream. Large stalks of chrysanthemum bloom behind them. All against an ethereal nashiji ground.
The cover of the box features five reserves:

An impressive pair of antique Chinese two tiered hexagon shaped wedding basket or box. Made of lacquered bamboo and rattan. Hand painted in red and black with green accents.
Written cursive script translates to poems about "picking mulberry leaves" and "the dangerous and difficult road when traveling through mountains". Also mentioned "Bailu" (15th solar term in the traditional Chinese calendars, around September), "Huangmei" (rainy season, in the Middle And Lower Reaches Of The Yangtze River), which could indicate this basket is probably made in the region near middle or lower part of Yangtze river.
The orange marks on bottom ??/?? both translate to Wu Dui, who we assume was the artist / maker.
Festive red stacking lacquer boxes are used for carrying food during the wedding procession of the bride. Usually there are two sets of boxes to balance each on the end of the pole. The top box serves as a lid for the bottom box and has a lid of its own. All are beautifully painted in red for good luck.

The manuscript chest is heavily rococo influenced, speaking to the French presence in the region at the time. The carved teak stand is formed as a raised platform set upon four large scrolling acanthus leaf feet, with carved flour-de-lis to the apron.
The cover for the stand is also carved from teak, and features a series of rectangular cartouches, each set with a red foil backed glass "gem", surrounded by shell inlay, and embellished with green and silver foil backed glass sequins.
The top of the cover features the same design motif, with the addition of thayo lacquer design elements, and is strongly reminiscent of Tibetan manuscript...
