Barcelona artist Raul de la Torre's vibrant abstract mixed media artworks pay homage to the material. This colorful 30 inch high by 48 inch wide original artwork on canvas is wired and ready to hang. Embroidery provides another layer as it creates thick shadows with organic shapes. De la Torre makes horizontal cuts on the canvas or paper and covers these open areas using color-matching cotton thread. When combined with light, these shapes create a more dynamic surface and offer different views of the work to various observers. The sides of this artwork are painted white and it does not require framing. It is signed and dated by the artist in the lower right corner as well as on the back. Bredon’s Norton is a village located in the Cotswolds, on the slopes of Bredon Hill in South Worcestershire. The America women’s rights activist Victoria Woodhull Martin moved to the village in 1901 and by 1908 had set up an agricultural school for women at her Norton’s Park estate. The Antarctic explore Raymond Priestley also lived there. Although Bates was living in Surrey at the time of this painting, he would have been familiar with the area after having lived and worked in Worcestershire for some considerable time. He would have also most likely been aware of Victoria Woodhull Martin and the school. David Bates was born in March, Cambridge in 1840 to Benjamin Bates a shoe maker and Sarah Bates. By 1851, the family had moved to Upton upon Severn in Worcestershire and from 1855 Bates became an apprentice at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works in Worcester. There he developed his artistic talent, painting flower decorations onto vases and plates. At some point after 1861, he became a full time artist and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1863, continuing to exhibit there until 1893. He also exhibited at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Suffolk Street and the Grosvenor Gallery. He married Elizabeth Higgs from Worcester in 1867 and they lived at Cherry Orchard, Bath Road in Worcester where their children were later born. Nils or Niels Hans Christiansen was a well-accomplished painter born in Esbjerg in the Jutland peninsula of southwest Denmark on 22 July, 1850. He specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land. He first came to England in 1863 for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria. Although he worked mainly in Denmark and Norway, he spent some time in England where he is believed to have exhibited with many of the leading art galleries in London. In addition to exhibiting in England, Christiansen also exhibited in his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member. He seems to have settled in England and on 10 September 1887 he married Alice Dickens at York Square, Stepney. Together the couple lived at 36 Dempsey Street, Mile End with their children. One of their sons, Albert Edward Christiansen (1887-1927) also became an artist. Christiansen’s success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901, he had become a British subject and had moved to 15 Queens Road in Plaistow, West Ham where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1922 at Plaistow, aged 71. Glen Coe is a valley located in the Highlands to the North of the county of Argyll and close to the province of Lochaber. The area, which became infamous for the Massacre of Glencoe is one of Scotland’s most scenic Highland glens. William Watson was born in Islington in 1847, the son of the London miniature painter William John Watson (1810-1871) and his wife Caroline (née Butcher). His brothers Charles Watson (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1921) were also artists. His father seems to have travelled around and after spending time in Brighton, the family moved to Bransford Road in Worcester during the early part of the 1860’s. As well as being taught by his father, Watson received his early training in the studio of Sir Francis Grant PRA (1803-1878). He later became a pupil of Sir Edwin Henry Landseer RA (1802-1873) and Rosa Bonheur (1822–1899). Both Landseer and Bonheur had a great influence on his work and he began specialising in scenes of cattle and sheep. By 1866 he had become a full time artist and began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists. The Herald, dressed in yellow livery plays a fanfare as the others prepare for the arrival of the Royal boat. Arthur David Mccormick was a painter of historical, naval, and genre scenes who was born in Coleraine, Ulster in Northern Ireland on 14 October, 1860. After attending his local school, he studied at the Government School of Design in Belfast. He then moved to London where he enrolled at the Royal College of Art in 1883. To support his studies he also contributed drawings and designs to the English Illustrated Magazine and Illustrated London News. McCormick made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1889 continuing to exhibit there throughout his life. He exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1890, becoming a member in 1897 and at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour and the Alpine Club Gallery. As well as being a yachtsman he also took an interest in mountaineering and on 5 February 1892 joined Sir Martin Conway’s expedition to the Karakoram Himalayas as their artist. He produced more than 300 illustrations, mainly watercolour paintings which appeared in Conway's 1894 book ‘Climbing and exploration in the Karakoram Himalayas’. He later published his own book ‘An artist in the Himalayas’ using his pencil sketches from the expedition. He married Helen MacAlpine-Woods at Strean Church, Newtonwards, Ireland on 25 September, 1894. The couple lived at 58 Queens Road, St John’s Wood where their only daughter Helen Gladys was born in 1895. During the same year, he travelled with Clinton T. Dent’s on his expedition to the Caucasus Mountains, producing a number of sketches and drawings. He was also made a fellow of the Royal Geographical Society in 1895 in recognition of his work. After the death of his wife in 1899, he remained at Queens Road from where he continued to work and exhibit, employing a governess to help with his daughter. When the Ulster Arts Club was formed in 1902 he was among its first honorary members. In 1905, he was made a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and in 1906 became a member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. On 7 May, 1906 he married Helen (Nellie) Elizabeth K Laker, his daughter’s governess. In addition to painting he also produced illustrations for many books mostly related to travel and adventure. He was employed by John Player & Son in 1927 to paint the sailor's head and shoulders for their cigarette packets as well as producing a number of oil paintings which were used as promotional posters. Around 1934 he moved to 53 Colet Gardens, Hammersmith, where he spent the rest of his life. He died in London, aged 83, on 12 March, 1943. Examples of his work can be found at the Alpine Club Collection, Coleraine Museum, Grundy Art Gallery, Imperial War Museum, National Museum of Wales, National Museum of the Royal Navy Portsmouth, Newport Museum, The Box Plymouth and Williamson Art Gallery. The soldier, wearing his order of the légion d'honneur, walks with his daughter past a boy with dogs as other parents and school children follow behind. The ‘Villa Du Connétable’ or The Constable’s Villa was the local name for the historic Château d'Écouen. Dargelas lived at Ecouen so would have known the building and area well. Originally a fortress inherited by Anne de Montmorency, the Grand Constable and Commander of the French Army, it was rebuilt by him as a much grander property in 1539. It remained in the Montmorency family until 1632 when it passed to the Bourbon-Conde family. Like many estates owned by the aristocracy, it was confiscated by the state during the French Revolution. In 1806, Napoleon Bonaparte gave it to the Legion d’Honneur and it became a school for the daughters of the chevaliers of the order. Although it was returned to the Conde family after the restoration of Louis XVII, it was re-established as a school for the Legion d’Honneur in 1850 by Napoleon II. In 1862, the château was declared a Monument historique. It remained as a school until 1962 and in 1969 become the home of the collection of Renaissance art of the Cluny Museum. It opened as the French National Museum of the Renaissance in 1977. Andre-Henri Dargelas was a genre painter born in Bordeaux, France on 11 October, 1828 to Jean Baptiste Dargelas and Jeanne Virginie Mimandre. In 1854, he left his home to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris where he became a pupil of François Edouard Picot (1786-1868). He lived at 49, Rue d’Hauteville, from where he made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857. He continued to exhibit at the Salon over the years, receiving a number of medals and honourable mentions. At some point during the early 1860’s, Dargelas moved to Sarcelles, a commune in Northern Paris. By this time, he had begun specialising in paintings of children in a naturalistic style at play. Many of his paintings featured school children, with some set outside against architectural backdrops, such as this fine example. His paintings proved highly popular with collectors in Paris as well as in London and New York. On 10 February 1866, he married Catherine Etienne Gabrielle Duverger. Edward Ladell British, (1821–1886) Still Life of Fruit & Flowers in a Basket Oil on canvas, signed with monogram Image size: 13.5 inches x 11.75 inches Size including frame: 20.75 inches x 19 inches An exquisitely painted still life of roses and fruit by Edward Ladell. Pink and yellow rose blooms are depicted with black and white grapes and a pear on a marble topped table. Behind them, a basket of fruit containing plums and a nectarine can also be seen. Edward Ladell was born in Hasketon, Suffolk on 12 April, 1821 the son of Christmas Ladell a coachbuilder and his wife Mary Birch. He was a self-taught artist and initially worked in his father’s business in Colchester as an engraver. He is also believed to have worked as a pattern designer for a Flemish textile company in Colchester. In 1848 he married Julianna Roofe and they spent their married life living at East Hill in Colchester. During his spare time he began producing still life paintings in the Dutch traditions and in 1856 made his debut at the Royal Academy with a ‘Study from Nature’. He also exhibited at the British Institute from 1857 and the Royal Society of British Artists from 1858. Ladell’s exposure at the London galleries began earning him commissions and by 1861, he had become a full time artist. He was highly successful in his lifetime, earning many commissions and commanding high prices for his work. He became one of the best known still life painters of his generation. George Stainton British, (1838-1900) Evening on the Thames Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1875, transcribed verso (sic) Image size: 13 inches x 19 inches Size including frame: 19.75 inches x 25.75 inches This atmospheric seascape by George Stainton features ships and fishing boats on the Thames at sunset. In the foreground, a fisherman hauls in the last of his catch whilst hay barges make their way to the shore. George Stainton was a marine and landscape artist who was born in Aston, Birmingham in October 1838 to John Stainton and Ann Horton. By the age of 12, he was working as a Papier-mâché painter and then later as a Japanner before becoming a full-time artist. He specialised in painting seascapes and river scenes in the style of Abraham Hulk and was influenced by the Dutch school. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists from 1865 and also at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. He married Clara Adelaide Mason on 8 November, 1866 and together they lived in Addesley Street, Aston. The couple had 8 children and one of their sons Ernest Stainton became a lithographic artist. By 1881, Stainton had moved to nearby Moseley Road where many Birmingham artists of the industrial period lived and also took up photography. Sometime during the late 1880’s early 1890’s, he moved to 14 St Pauls Road, Kings Norton. He died at Kings Norton in 1900. Joseph Clark ROI British, (1834-1926) The Coronation March Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1902 Image size: 25.5 inches x 19.5 inches Size including frame: 32.5 inches x 26.75 inches This painting by Joseph Clark depicts a lively group of boys leading a patriotic parade through a village. Two of the older children hold standards aloft, whilst the others wave flags or play instruments. In 1902, at the time of this painting Clark was living on Pinner Road, Harrow-on-the-Hill. The church depicted is very similar to Pinner Parish Church, which would have been the closest one to him at the time. On 9 August of that year, the coronation of Edward VII and Alexandra took place at Westminster Abbey. Special events were held all across the country to mark the occasion.
