From April 24 through 26, Los Angeles’s Culver City plays host to a vast collection of iconic 20th-century furniture, art, jewelry and decorative objects offered at yet another edition of the Los Angeles Modernism Show. With dozens of dealers exhibiting at the much-anticipated annual event — attended in past years by such celebrities as Courtney Cox, Julie Bowen and Ted Danson and design aficionados like Kelly Wearstler and Cliff Fong — this year’s iteration presents no shortage of chic vintage finds.
Missing the fair? Not to worry: Our editors’ selection from exhibiting 1stdibs galleries serves as both inspiration for the home and a visual encyclopedia of Modernism’s international mark. Included below: Early modern classics from the Art Deco period as well as selections from Georg Jensen’s prolific career in silverwork; Mid-century American and Scandinavian staples by the likes of McCobb, Henningsen, Parzinger, Platner, Noguchi and Baughman; and Brutalist signatures in brass and welded metal; plus outdoor decor, decorative glass and fine jewelry. Shaped like a gorgeous feather with a octagon-cut emerald as focus-point, this Emerald, Diamond Gold Brooch with Yellow Sapphire is so exquisite that it can be compared with one of the sculptural masterpieces of the Roman baroque style, the ‘Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.’
The sculpture was inspired by a vision of Saint Teresa, which she described in a very visual, even sexual way. An angel plunged a golden spear into her heart, leaving her breathless and consumed with a spiritual pain so intense that she did not want it to end.
This brooch is the contemporary transformation of the sculpture found in the Cornaro Chapel, in Santa Maria della Vittoria, in Rome. The artist was Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
Why do we say this?
Bernini began by designing the chapel as the 'theatre' for his sculpture. Similarly, the Vintage-inspired Emerald, Diamond Gold Brooch also needs a setting, a background. That, of course, is you!
The ‘Ecstasy’ is floodlit by beams of natural light from a hidden window. The natural light mingles with the shine from a cluster of vertical bronze shafts behind the sculpture, shaped to bear a resemblance to the rays of the sun.

Luckenbooth brooches are traditional Scottish love tokens. They are usually a heart shaped brooch, often with a crown or coronet above one heart, or two intertwined hearts, with similar motifs to the Claddagh ring. European Heart-shaped brooches date back to late medieval period but this design probably did not appear in Scotland before the 17th century. It became very popular in the 19th century, featuring in the ranges of Scottish manufacturing jewellers, for the Highland outfitter and tourist trades. They are typically made of silver, although gold heart brooches were made for wealthy people and may be engraved or set with stones.
The name comes from the Luckenbooths of Edinburgh. Luckenbooth is a Scots word for a lockable stall or workshop. Originating in the 15th century, they were the city's first permanent shops, situated on the Royal Mile near St. Giles Cathedral. Initially housing mainly silversmiths and goldsmiths.
