Furniture
One of the foremost cabinetmakers of the Louis XVI period, Adam Weisweiler created furnishings that are highly prized by collectors and buyers with discerning tastes.
Weisweiler defined his work with fine lacquers and pristine veneers, and often integrated polished steel. With a strong fondness for the Etruscan style of the day, Weisweiler's creations closely follow architectural design concepts. Featuring elaborate scrolls, animal figures and cherubs, he added lavish ornamentation and embellishment to his furniture, making his work as much art as it was a craft. He occasionally incorporated into his furniture porcelain panels produced by Sèvres, a popular manufacturer of European ceramics that served the crown with serveware, vases and other decorative objects.
Born in Germany in 1744, Weisweiler had established himself in Paris as a foreign artisan by 1777, with special rights to work in privileged places. In 1778, he achieved the rank of Master Cabinetmaker. He soon earned the privilege of serving as a cabinetmaker for Queen Marie-Antoinette, also designing a large portion of the French nobility's furniture.
Following the French Revolution, Weisweiler resumed his work under the banner of the new empire, becoming a supplier of furniture to Queen Hortense and the Bonaparte family. Other notable figures of the Empire period — including the Duke of Northumberland and the Prince of Wales — sought Weisweiler for his extraordinary neoclassical-style work.
Weisweiler continued to craft fine furnishings for royalty and nobility alike, until his retirement in 1809, after his wife's passing. He died around 1820, and his son Weisweiler succeeded him in his trade.
