Zebras are one of the most interesting and amusing of African animals. They share the genus Equus with horses and donkeys. In a group it is believed their dizzying stripes confuse prey - or perhaps make them dizzy. An artist's delight, zebras' black and white stripes call out to be painted. Taking it a step further, Carole Garland attempts to confuse the viewer with a "Now you see it, now you don't" look at the zebras standing in a streambed in South Africa. Painted in oil on a 30"x40" wood panel, the wood sides serve as a frame around the painting. Creekside one can see the rocks, pebbles and leaves at the bottom of the stream or the viewer can observe the water's surface: floating bugs, bubbles, ripples and reflections, but it's difficult to catch the bottom and the surface simultaneously. However, the photographer or artist can capture the stream's surface and pebble strewn bottom at once. Carole Garland set this as her goal in this painting from her "Reflection" series. A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40".
