Decorate an office shelf with this cheerful pair of antique terracotta children busts. Crafted in Paris, France circa 1880, each subject features a child face sculpture standing on a black painted socle base. Each figure has wonderful facial expressions and nice details. Both artworks are signed on the back E. Guillemin with marks reading "Quai Jemmapes 6". The busts are in excellent condition with the original terracotta patinated finish. Émile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841-1907) was a French sculptor of the Belle Époque. He worked mainly in bronze and also made artwork subjects in terracotta. He studied under his father, the painter Auguste Guillemin, and under Jean-Jules Salmson. He showed work at the Salon of Paris from 1870-1899, and in 1897 received an honorable mention there. His sculptures incorporated themes inspired by the French revolution, Mediterranean mythology, and orientalist aesthetics. His oeuvre is reminiscent of other mid-18th century European bronze sculptors, including Jef Lambeaux, Marcel...

Neo-Egyptian Marble Clock Attributed to G. Servant, France, Circa 1870

By Georges Emile Henri Servant

Located in PARIS, FR

Black and red marble pyramid shaped Egyptian style clock attributed to G. Servant, surmounted by a patinated bronze figure representing the Egyptian goddess Isis sitting on her throne. Wearing the Hathor hairdress (the solar disc surrounded by the sacred cow horns), she holds in her right hand the Ouadj, the goddesses scepter surmounted by a canopy of papyrus, symbolizing health and eternal youth and in her left hand, the cross of life Ankh, symbol of rebirth and eternity. That Egyptian style in fashion since Napoleon the First and his military campaigns in Egypt around 1799 was rediscovered in France in the 1830's and above all in the 1860's. Some renowned French artists, such the sculptors and bronze-casters Guillaume Denière (1815-1903), Emile Hébert (1828-1893) et Georges Servant (1828-1890), presented at the 1867 and 1878 Paris Universal Exhibitions, an a-part section dedicated to their Egyptian style production. Their shows drew then considerable attention from the public and the wealthy collectors. During the 1867 Universal Exhibition, one could admire the Stand realized by the French silversmith-jeweller Gustave Baugrand (1826-1870), where his works executed in most Fine materials took inspiration from the Egyptian Antiques, exhibited then in the Louvre museum. Georges Emile Henri Servant (1828-c.1890), who took over his father in 1855 at their foundry, rue Vieille-du-Temple, in Paris, specialized in the production of neo-Egyptian style clocks, very popular in France since 1860’s, and also the making of Greek style decorative objects. He drew considerable attention to the high quality of his bronzes at the 1855 Paris Universal Exhibition and then at the 1862 London Exhibition. At this time Servant exported up to 40% of his production, principally to the United States, where for instance, his clocks were sold with great success by Louis Tiffany Inc. or Hamann & Roche of New York. But his success came really at the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition, where he was awarded a gold medal for his neo-Greek and Egyptian works (Les Merveilles...

Art Nouveau Clock with Cloisonné Enamel Decoration in the Oriental Style

By Georges Emile Henri Servant

Located in Paris, FR

Cage clock of the Art Nouveau period in bronze and polychrome cloisonné enamels, of oriental style. The bronze structure is gilded, coppered, and decorated in places with acanthus leaves and flowers. The whole mechanism is surrounded by six columns with richly flowered motifs, four of which form feet. Each shaft ends in a button shape in a very oriental taste. The round dial has a green marble center and displays the hours in Roman numerals. It bears a signature on the front, "SERVANT FILS & J, Paris". This 1900 clock testifies to the attraction for the Orient and the Orientalist aesthetic which experienced a considerable boom in Western countries throughout the 19th century. Circa: 1900 Base dimensions: 27 cm x 19 cm (10.63 in x 7.48 in) Overall dimensions: W: 27cm, D: 19cm, H: 44cm. Overall dimensions: W: 10.6in, D: 7.5in, H: 17.3in. The technique of cloisonne enamels Cloisonné is a technique for making objects with enamel decoration surrounded by curved copper wires. This ancestral process originated in the Arabian Peninsula and was imported into China in the 13th century. Craftsmen quickly appropriated this technique and developed it to the point of making it a typically Chinese art which had its golden age during the Ming dynasty. The Chinese cloisonné is found on many objects such as vases, bowls or chests and fascinates by its impressive number of partitions that give it a rich and unique decoration. From the 14th century onwards, Peking enamels...

Egyptian Revival Antique Bronze Sculpture Clock of "Isis" by Pierre Emile Hebert
Egyptian Revival Antique Bronze Sculpture Clock of "Isis" by Pierre Emile Hebert

Egyptian Revival Antique Bronze Sculpture Clock of "Isis" by Pierre Emile Hebert

By Georges Emile Henri Servant, Pierre-Eugène-Émile Hébert

Located in Shippensburg, PA

An incredibly fine casting of Isis, this coveted model is a rare find on the open market. The queen is depicted with a cool and calm demeanor, her eyes betraying no emotion or sentiment as she looks to an infinite point in the distance. Her attire is regal with a golden crown stylized as a bird and a vast choker necklace with incised designs and tear-drop embellishments being finished in brilliant gold while the rest of her body is patinated in near black. The casting quality is typical of Servant with extraordinary care shown to even the slightest details, perfect skin and surfaces throughout, crisp eyelids and minute jeweler-grade incised detailing. The bust was retailed in many different configurations - set over a clock, standing alone as a bronze, standing alone as a bronze over an angular marble base and as a pair of bronze busts set over marble bases together with her pharaoh Ramses. The present model surmounts its original mantel clock, this a distinctly neoclassical trapezoidal form with stepped levels of alternating sienna marble and Egyptian black marble, the overall body being finished in the sienna marble with deep incised lines set at equal intervals around the black marble clock face gilt-incised with opposing Phoenix birds. The original movement is sealed with the Japy Freres marking and retains its original pendulum, though it has not been tested for operation, accuracy or duration. Pierre-Eugéne-Emile Hebert...
