Harland Miller Art

British, b. 1972

Harland Miller is a British artist and novelist, born in 1964, in Yorkshire, England. He is best known for his satirical paintings of re-imagined Penguin classics, often with his invented sardonic titles. He takes artistic influence from Ed Ruscha, Anselm Kiefer and Robert Rauschenberg and cites Mark Rothko as one of his favorite artists. He attended the Chelsea College of Art, in London, from where he received his BA and MA degrees, after which he traveled extensively, living in New York, New Orleans, Paris and Berlin. Miller first achieved critical acclaim with his writing. His debut novel, Slow down Arthur, Stick to Thirty (2000), featured a kid who travels around northern England, with a David Bowie impersonator. In the same year, Miller published the novella, First I was Afraid, I was Petrified, based on the true story of a female relative with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. In 2001, Miller produced the first of a series of paintings, based on the dust jackets of old Penguin books. He was struck by the visceral nostalgia that the book covers, rather than their contents, evoked.

Plaster NO. 1 Magazine Hand Signed LUV Harland Miller Large Poster 2020 Fine Art
By Harland Miller
Located in Draper, UT
With Josh Crumpler on the design and layout, the team sought to give issue its own stamp – “to really give a sense of who the artist is,” says Milo. In this sense, they wanted to distinguish how Harland was “very carefree” and how he had a “slightly punk” attitude on life, but also how his was was notably concise. “It was about bringing together those elements,” continues Milo. “He is pleased with how it came out so that was a big plus.” Upon deciding on the aesthetic and feel of the magazine, Milo goes on to explain how they pulled many cues from postmodernism. Especially that of mixed-media, and how, with Harland producing his own self-portrait to be included in the issue, they wanted to juxtapose the photograph with a handwritten Q&A. “Harland’s work merges a love of pop culture, abstract expressionism and wordplay,” says Milo, “so the combination of these styles really fit the mould and influenced the design of Plaster.” This conception effortlessly rings out from the magazine, with what Milo describes as “clashing Herb Lubalin...

Deborah Kass Feminist Jewish American Pop Art Silkscreen Screenprint Ltd Edition
By Deborah Kass
Located in Surfside, FL
Deborah Kass (born 1952) Limited edition geometric abstract lithograph in colors on artist paper. Hand signed and dated in pencil to lower right. 1973. Edition: 102/120 to lower left. Dimensions: sight: 16-3/4" W x 21-1/4" H. Frame: 24-5/8" W x 28-7/8" H. Finding inspiration in pop culture, political realities, film, Yiddish, art historical styles, and prominent art world figures, Deborah Kass uses appropriation in her work to explore notions of identity, politics, and her own cultural interests. She received her BFA in painting at Carnegie Mellon University and studied at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and the Art Students League of New York. Deborah Kass (born 1952) is an American artist whose work explores the intersection of pop culture, art history, and the construction of self. Deborah Kass works in mixed media, and is most recognized for her paintings, prints, photography, sculptures and neon lighting installations. Kass's early work mimics and reworks signature styles of iconic male artists of the 20th century including Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, and Ed Ruscha. Kass's technique of appropriation is a critical commentary on the intersection of social power relations, identity politics, and the historically dominant position of male artists in the art world. Deborah Kass was born in 1952 in San Antonio, Texas. Her grandparents were from Belarus and Ukraine, first generation Jewish immigrants to New York. Kass's parents were from the Bronx and Queens, New York. Her father did two years in the U.S. Air Force on base in San Antonio until the family returned to the suburbs of Long Island, New York, where Kass grew up. Kass’s mother was a substitute teacher at the Rockville Centre public schools and her father was a dentist and amateur jazz musician. At age 14, Kass began taking drawing classes at The Art Students League in New York City which she funded with money she made babysitting. In the afternoons, she would go to theater on and off Broadway, often sneaking for the second act. During her high school years, she would take her time in the city to visit the Museum of Modern Art, where she would be exposed to the works of post-war artists like Frank Stella and Willem De Kooning. At age 17, Stella’s retrospective exhibition inspired Kass to become an artist as she observed and understood the logic in his progression of works and the motivation behind his creative decisions. Kass received her BFA in Painting at Carnegie Mellon University (the alma mater of artist Andy Warhol), and studied at the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program Here, she created her first work of appropriation, Ophelia’s Death After Delacroix, a six by eight foot rendition of a small sketch by the French Romantic artist, Eugène Delacroix. At the same time Neo-Expressionism was being helmed by white men in the late Reagan years, women were just beginning to create a stake in the game for critical works. “The Photo Girls...

The Pop Art Appropriation Print: Electric Chair, Empress of India, Spray Signed
By Richard Pettibone
Located in New York, NY
Richard Pettibone The Appropriation Print: Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, 1970 (Andy Warhol's Electric Chair, Frank Stella's Empress of India and Roy Lichtenstein's Spray) Silkscreen in colors on smooth wove paper Pencil signed and dated 1971 on the front Frame included: Elegantly floated and framed in a white wood frame under UV plexiglass in accordance with museum conservation standards Measurements: frame: 15 7/8 x 19 3/4 x 1 3/4 inches sheet: 12 1/4 x 16 inches This is one of Richard Pettibone's most iconic, popular and desirable prints done in 1970 - during the most influential era of the Pop Art movement. This homage to Andy Warhol, Frank Stella and Roy Lichtenstein exemplifies the type of artistic appropriation he was engaging in early on during the height of the Pop Art movement - long before more contemporary artists like Deborah Kass, Louise Lawler, etc. followed suit. Pencil signed and dated recto. It was created in limited edition - though the exact number is not known. More about RIchard Pettibone: As a young painter, Richard Pettibone began replicating on a miniature scale works by newly famous artists, and later also modernist masters, signing the original artist’s name as well as his own. His versions of Andy Warhol’s soup...

Harland Miller, 'Narcissist Seeks Similar' Penguin, Etching, 2021
By Harland Miller
Located in New York, NY
The 'Narcissist Seeks Similar' limited edition etching boasts energizing fuchsias with complementary pop art colors, subtle textures, and iconic motif by artist and writer Harland Miller. Created in 2021 with multiple layers of etching and relief printing, each penguin in the edition of only 50 is hand-finished. Miller connects Pop Art, Abstraction, and Figurative Painting with his love of text, as the Penguin Book dust jacket paintings first appeared in 2001 and are inspired by the books from the 1950’s and 60’s. His satirical re-imagining of the titles while timeless, are perhaps particularly relevant in today’s world. The idea to create the limited edition series was from an enormously popular recent painting of the same title, from Miller’s ‘Penguin’ series, which was first exhibited at the artist’s largest solo exhibition in his hometown of York in the UK. Miller commented on the work, “This title came from a series called ‘Circling The Small Ads’. At the risk of over explaining this – because I’m going back a ways, these were quite literally small ads usually placed in local newspapers by people looking for some form, (often a very specific form), of companionship. My eye was always drawn to the way they were composed, with the seeker – whoever they may be – describing themselves in two or three carefully considered words, underneath which – centered and occupying its own line – was the word ’Seeks’, and then of course below that was a brief description of what, or whom they were seeking. Desire was the activating sort of impulse behind these ads and I wanted that to come out in the painting itself: the way it was painted and the colour. I mean, colour changes the way in which you will read something. This kind of cerise pink I used (which according to Penguin’s colour-key, denoted the series on travel and adventure) is a colour that elicits a really strong response – it’s very immediate – like some primal flame being turned up inside. The colour itself was important because the narcissist had to be about desire – right, and of course that had to be special, and this is a ‘Penguin Special’ – the only one of its kind.” The work comes ready to install in a custom frame with museum caliber non-glare UV protective glass and hooks on reverse. Harland Miller is a British artist and author who is best known for his large-scale, photo-realistic paintings, posters, and prints of vintage Penguin book covers. A critically acclaimed novelist as well as an influential painter, his practice explores the combination of image and text, similar in scope to American artists Ed Ruscha and Mel Bochner. “There's always been this compulsion to write on pictures,” he has observed. The satirical covers he paints often feature his own invented, sardonic titles combined with the iconic Penguin logo and vivid pop art...
