Javacheff Christo Figurative Prints
Bulgarian, 1935-2020
Christo (Javacheff) was born in Gabrovo, Bulgaria and was known for his large-scale "wrapping" sculptures. His work was done as a collaboration with his wife Jeanne-Claude who was born in Morocco on the same day (June 13, 1935), and she has retroactively been given credit for these world-famous installations. Promoting the work under Christo's name only was a conscious decision on their part, due to the prejudices against female artists in the art world. Despite the large scale and sometimes controversial nature of the projects, they deny that their projects contain any deeper meaning than their immediate aesthetic impact. The purpose of their art, they contend, is simply to create works of art for joy and beauty, and to create new ways of seeing familiar landscapes. The two fell in love through creating artwork together, and were known to fly in separate planes: in case one crashed, the other could continue their work.(Biography provided by ArtWise)

Additional Information: This lithograph with collage of fabric, thread and pencil is hand signed and dated in pencil by the artist "Christo 84" at the lower right corner.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100 beside the signature.
It was printed in a limited edition of 100 signed and numbered impressions by Landfall Press, Chicago and co-published by the artist and Edition Schellmann, Munich and New York. There were also 20 artist's proofs
Note: In the 1960s, the Marchese Annibale Berlingieri from Rome was an important collector of contemporary art. While visiting his country villa in Taranto, Christo noticed that the Marchese had an ancient carriage on the property. Christo proposed wrapping the carriage with fabric and created a spontaneous sculpture, to the delight of the Marchese. Christo created a lithograph of the sculpture which was editioned then collaged with fabric.
