Lee Wells Color Photography

American, b. 1971
Lee Wells (b.1971) is a conceptual artist whose practice, rooted in the act of painting, draws inspiration from the epic myth of the avant-garde, the enthusiasm of the New York School, the praxis of the Situationists, the process of Fluxus, and the contradictions of Postmodernism. Wells enjoys making things, collaborating with others, and learning something new as often as possible. Most recently he has been experimenting with new technologies to expand on the new frontier of Human / AI collaboration in the arts. Historically his work has focused on systems of power and control in society and has been presented in various forms internationally for over 30 years, including the Guggenheim Museum, MCA Chicago, PS1/MoMA, 51st Venice Biennale, The National Arts Club, and Hermitage Museum, as well as numerous universities, festivals, art fairs, and galleries. Wells was a co-founder of The Perpetual Art Machine, the video art community portal project (2006-2011) and has directed the alternative curatorial platform IFAC Arts since 1996 which is currently based in New York’s Lower East Side and Athens, Greece.

Located in New York, NY
Delos Column #2 30 x 20 inches Edition of 10 20 x 16 inches edition of 20 Where light was born It’s a UNESCO world heritage site. It’s an ark of history, floating lazily on the waters of the Aegean Sea, just a few miles away from cosmopolitan Mykonos. It’s a chance to walk around the revival of the glory of the Greek civilization. It’s the head priest of the Cyclades, the birthplace of the immortals. In the ancient times, the myth of god Apollo, god of light, and goddess Artemis having been born there rendered the island sacred: no mortal would ever be allowed to be born on its land. But, a cradle of gods as the island has been, no mortals would ever be allowed to die on it either. So, apart from it being a conspicuous religious and economic centre, the island had also been exclusive in that: even during the years of peak of the Delian Alliance, women on the brink of childbirth and people close to dying would be carried to the neighbouring island of Rineia. The whole of the known world of that age was aware of the sacredness of the island and of its uniqueness. Lee Wells is a conceptual artist, independent curator and writer working in New York since 2000. His artwork and projects question systems of power and control and have been exhibited internationally, including the 51st Venice Biennale, 2nd Moscow Biennial, The Guggenheim Museum, NCCA Moscow, PS1/MoMA, and the 1st Mykonos Biennale. He has lectured on art, technology, and contemporary society at many schools and universities including: Columbia University, Princeton University, New York University, Carnegie Mellon University, School of Visual Arts, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Moscow School of Photography, and others. His projects and exhibitions have been reviewed, publications include: The New York Times, The NY Observer, The Art Newspaper...

"Dry Season" Zebra Herd at Watering Hole Wildlife Photograph Edition 330/950
By Thomas Mangelsen
Located in Houston, TX
Color wildlife photograph from 1991 by photojournalist Thomas Mangelsen. The work features a herd of zebras gathered around a watering hole. Signed, dated, and editioned 33/950 along lower from margin. Currently hung a complementary black frame with a cream matting. Dimensions Without Frame: H 24.5 in. x W 35 in. Artist Biography: A Nebraska native, Mangelsen’s love of nature, his life outdoors and business success were heavily influenced by his father. An avid sportsman, Harold Mangelsen took his sons to favorite blinds along the Platte River in Nebraska to observe the great flocks of ducks, geese and cranes that migrate through the valley. From these adventures, Mangelsen learned important lessons for photographing in the field, most notably patience and understanding animal behavior. In 1965, Mangelsen began studying business at the University of Nebraska. In 1967, Tom transferred to Doane College in Crete, Nebraska, where he changed his major and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in biology. Tom continued postgraduate study in zoology and wildlife biology at the University of Nebraska and Colorado State University. In 1970 Mangelsen moved to Nederland, Colorado. He spent two years living in the Rocky Mountains in an old mining shack without electricity or running water with his English setter, black lab and raccoon. Tom continued to work on his photography and studied arctic alpine ecology at the University of Colorado’s Mountain Research Station near Nederland. There he met Bert Kempers, a CU film producer, who later hired Tom as cinematographer and film editor for his company Westwind Productions, making educational and nature documentaries. Tom longed to make a documentary about the Platte River and its great wildlife resource. He returned to the Platte each spring to film the great crane migration. These experiences led to Tom traveling to the cranes’ nesting grounds in Alaska and their wintering areas in Texas. National Geographic television wanted to produce a documentary, which would chronicle the plight of the endangered whooping crane...
