Mimmo Rotella Figurative Prints
Italian, 1918-2006
Mimmo Rotella was an Italian artist and poet who is best known for collages made from torn advertising posters in a medium that he called "double décollages."
Rotella was born on October 7, 1918, in Catanzaro, Italy, and studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples before moving to Rome in 1945. There, he became associated with the Lettrism movement and — along with Raymond Hains, Jacque Villeglé and François Dufrêne — became known as one of "Les Affichistes," an artist group credited as the forefathers of street art.
Rotella's first solo exhibition was held in 1951 in at the Galleria Chiurazzi in Rome, and later that same year, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship with which he traveled to Kansas City University. In 1961, he was invited by Pierre Restany to join the New Realism movement, whose members included Yves Klein, Arman and Jean Tinguely. In 1964, he represented Italy at the Venice Biennale. He died on January 8, 2006, in Milan, Italy, at the age of 87.

Sir Peter Blake is one of the most successful British Pop artists from the fabulous 1960s, and his work can be found in major museums and collections worldwide. He is best known for creating the sleeve design of the Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. It was with the Young Contemporaries exhibition of 1961, where he exhibited alongside David Hockney and R.B. Kitaj, that Blake rose to prominence. Blake created this limited edition print, a tribute to the Art Car, exclusively for the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair 2013. The work sold out completely in less than 15 minutes. Lichtenstein made the paper plate for the well-known fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern, who had set up an uber-chic New York boutique called “On First Store”. ABOUT THE ARTIST
Mimmo Rotella (Catanzaro, Italy, 1918 - Milan, Italy, 2006) was an Italian artist who focused his work in painting and collage fundamentally. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples after leaving the army in 1944. A year later, just after the war, he moves to Rome where he comes into contact with avant-garde. There he developed a form of pictorial expression of neo-geometric nature. In 1949 Rotella creates a method called expression epilastic, a mixture consisting of words with sounds and onomatopoeias.
