Oscar Niemeyer Furniture

Brazilian, 1907-2012

Oscar Niemeyer made modernist architecture sexy. In his signature designs, such as those for the planned capital city of Brasília, Niemeyer created a distinctively buoyant architectural vocabulary of sweeping curves, flowing lines and organic forms (attributes that also characterize his seductive furniture). As expressions of faith in the power of modern architecture and design to foster progress, Niemeyer’s buildings have a kind of heroic poetry.

Oscar Ribeiro de Almeida Niemeyer Soares Filho was born to an upper-middle-class family in Rio de Janeiro. (His father was a graphic designer.) While in graduate school, Niemeyer began working for Lúcio Costa, one of the few modernist architects working in Brazil in the 1930s. Niemeyer would be assigned to the design team for a new building in Rio for the Ministry of Education and Health. The famed Swiss-born French architect Le Corbusier was hired as a consultant on the project, and through him Niemeyer would absorb many lessons in bringing a sense of structural lightness to large buildings — though he would never embrace the geometric forms espoused by Le Corbusier and the members of the Bauhaus.

“I am not attracted to straight angles or to the straight line, hard and inflexible, created by man,” Niemeyer would write in his memoirs. “I am attracted to free-flowing sensual curves.”

Nowhere would Niemeyer demonstrate his love of curvature more expressively and elegantly than in his designs for the principal buildings for Brasília, a project begun in 1956. The dramatic Congressional Palace features two stark towers flanked by a domed structure and a bowl-shaped edifice, for the upper and lower legislative houses. He placed the Palácio da Alvorada (the presidential residence) on a small peninsula jutting into a lake, so that the sequence of parabolic columns on its facade casts a mirror image on the water. Niemeyer’s grandest achievement was the city’s cathedral, a stunning composition of 16 arched vertical supports with tinted-glass interstices.

Four years after Brasília was completed, in 1960, Brazil’s elected government was overthrown in a military coup. Niemeyer, a member of the Communist party, was harassed continually by the junta. He left the country and did not return until democracy was restored, in 1985.

While in exile, in the early 1970s, Niemeyer began collaborating on furniture designs with his daughter, Anna Maria Niemeyer. Their best known pieces are seating furniture — the Alta lounge chair and ottoman and the Rio rocking chaise, which have flowing bases made of sheets of lacquered wood or stainless steel, share the aesthetics of Niemeyer’s architecture.

The Alta’s deep, oversized seat pads nod — much like the chair designs of Niemeyer’s countryman Sergio Rodrigues — to the Brazilian penchant for long, languorous conversations. Examples of both designs are priced at about $20,000, depending on age, condition and materials. As you will see on these pages, Oscar Niemeyer’s furniture designs are sleek, sculptural, comfortable and elegant — as well as a compact emblem of the work of one of the great architects of our time.

Broyhill Brasilia Dining Chairs Original Set of 10 Mid-Century Modern, 1962-1970
By Broyhill Brasilia
Located in Topeka, KS
Iconic Mid-Century Modern Broyhill Brasilia original set of 10 dining chairs, 2 arm and 8 sides. Dark walnut and new dark blue/black upholstery. In fabulous vintage condition apart from one side chair that had a broken back rail that has been repaired by our experienced staff. Please see photos, circa 1962-1970. Their iconic sculpted design inspired by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer is extremely desirable and sought after. Finding an original set of ten is rare! They have been re-upholstered in a fabric that is an ongoing debate here as to whether it is blue or black. Depending on the light some of us say blue and some say black, but either way, they are absolutely stunning. They are comprised of deep sultry walnut and the backs of the chairs bear the elegant triple Brasilia arches. Their high backs, tapered legs and sturdy frame unify their comfort. These will be wonderful encompassing any dining room table. The Brasilia Collection is Mid-Century Modern in style but borders on Brutalist although it would be beautiful in an Industrial or modern country setting as well. It is no coincidence that The Brasilia collection design is very architectural in style. It was introduced to the public at the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962 and drew its inspiration from the architecture of the newly created and majestic Capital of Brazil, Brasilia. The brochure for Brasilia by Broyhill Premier says…….”Brasilia…the city…by its daring and beauty has revolutionized architecture and opened vast new horizons of design. From this inspired dream, Broyhill Premier drew inspiration for the furniture grouping which bears the Fine young name: BRASILIA.” This line was extremely popular with the furniture buying public and is still sought out today. Broyhill ended production of this successful line sometime in the 1970s...

Walnut Broyhill Brasilia Magna Dresser Highboy Armoire by Oscar Niemeyer
By Broyhill Brasilia, Oscar Niemeyer
Located in Chattanooga, TN
This "Magna" dresser was delicately restored to preserve the original patina. The Brasilia line has elevated to a high-end status that has made these pieces very sought after and subsequently harder to find. We love this line and have never seen two pieces that look identical. Not only because of the variations in walnut grain, but the way that they age. We did our absolute best to recondition this armoir while preserving the rich, oily patina. The top was professionally refinished by our in-house cabinet shop to match the original and untouched sections. We're certain you won't be able to tell the difference. It's a delicate balancing act to maintain originality while also recondition issues that need improvement. It's a process we are continuing to perfect. Otherwise detailed top to bottom, inside and out. The metal tracks have been oiled to make sure the drawers open effortlessly. We're certain you won't find a more sublime example of this dresser anywhere. Mid-Century Modern Broyhill Brasilia Magna...

Mid Century Broyhill Brasilia Drop Leaf Tile Top Bar Cart Console Table
By Oscar Niemeyer, Broyhill
Located in Baltimore, MD
Absolutely beautiful and functional Mid-Century Modern drop leaf tile top bar cart console table circa 1960s, from the Brasilia Premier collection by Broyhill Furniture. This absolute jewel remains in nearly pristine condition. The Brasilia line is a collection that was first presented at the world’s fair in Seattle in 1962, as a tribute to the design of Brazilian famed architect Oscar Niemeyer. One of the most celebrated and highly collectible lines on the American atomic era of design. The cabinets’ signature arches and brass sculpted pulls are molded after buildings designed by Niemeyer for Brazil’s capital city. This drop-leaf bar cabinet/ cart features richly grained walnut, with a fully finished back. The finished back side makes this cart ideal for placement in an open floor plan, making it a great focal point. The walnut top with inset, original cobalt blue and white ceramic glazed tiles with white birds offers multiple expansion possibilities with two side / drop-leaves. Keep the leaves down and conserve valuable space or raise them on hinged extension to function as a serving cart. Each wing of the cart can be easily flipped up to provide an extra 11 inches on each side – up to 70 inches long total. When closed completely, it is reduced to a mere 48 inches, side console table, raised over brass casters allowing the cart to be tucked away if needed. This versatile console table offers plenty of storage options with three spacious drawers; one includes a felt lined interior with dividers for tidy storage of personal effects.
