About the artist.
Hans Figura (Austrian, 1898-1978) was a noted painter and etcher, who was well known for his aquatint etchings on paper or satin of European and American landscape and cityscape scenes, as well as paintings of landscape and cityscape scenes, Tyrolean Alp scenes of villages and chalets, street scenes, harbor and marine scenes.
Hans Figura was born January 22, 1898, in the small town of Nagy-Kikinda near the Austro-Hungarian border, to Austrian parents. His father was a railway official and he spent his childhood in various small villages along the railway line between Vienna and Hungary. He graduated from the highschool in Vienna and also studied at the Higher Graphical Federal Education and Research Institute, a vocational school there (Höhere Graphische Bundes-Lehr und Versuchsanstalt)
As a young man, he served as an officer in the Austrian Army during WWI from 1916-18 on the Russian and Italian fronts. After the war he attended medical school at the University of Vienna for several years beginning in 1918, and seven semesters later, he passed his first state exam, but eventually decided that he preferred the arts to medicine. He also studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna (Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien) and by 1922 he had devoted himself to painting and etching, while also working in other artistic printing mediums, batik, illustration, bookbinding and working with leather.
From 1923-28, Figura made numerous art study trips throughout Europe including; Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England, Czechoslovakia and Hungary. His first major success came in 1924, when he won acclaim for his etchings exhibited in Italy and the United States. In 1929, he visited the United States and in 1930, he traveled back to France, Holland and also Switzerland. During this time, Figura maintained studios in both New York City and Vienna, Austria. Throughout the course of his career, he exhibited his paintings and prints in many of the large cities throughout Europe and the United States and many of his etchings and paintings were acquired by museums and galleries, including The Kulturamt, Vienna, Austria; the Landesmuseum of Lower Austria; as well as The Society of Art Lovers, Berlin and Munich.

Children in a Boat
By Ming Wai
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork, "Children in a boat" 1976 in a color off set lithograph by renown Chinese/American artist Wai Ming A.K.A Lo Hing Kwok, b.1938. It is hand signed and inscribed A.P (Artist Proof) in pencil by the artist. The image size is 21.5 x 28.75 inches, sheet size is 32.5 x 39.5 inches. Custom framed in wood dark brown rustic frame and beige matting. It is in excellent condition
About the artist:
Wai Ming, was born in Canton, South China on November 11, 1938, the son of a school master with nine children. Extremely poor as a child, he was raised in Hong Kong enduring many hardships amidst a chaotic environment of war and refugee settlements. Wai Ming's love for art flourished and he developed his drawing techniques without any art education, just painting what he saw. In the 1960s, Ming found representation in Hong Kong and also took the unusual step of opening his own gallery to display his work in. His primary interest being to capture images of life in fishing villages, or 'fish-folk', who have retained traditional Chinese culture, his work was at home with the sensibilities of many art buyers in Hong Kong. Crossing the ocean in his mid-30s, Wai Ming arrived in San Francisco from Hong Kong in 1974. There, he experienced initial resistance from galleries and the official art world for a variety of reasons, but was ultimately embraced by dealer Jack Swanson...

Richard Haas (American, b.1936) is a practitioner of the trompe l'oeil artistic style, a technique that uses realistic images in a way that tricks the eye into perceiving the painting in three dimensions. Haas has painted hundreds of murals that incorporate trompe l'oeil methods in the depiction of the architectural features of the building. He was born in Spring Greene but grew up in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a Bachelor in Art. Instructors for his courses included Joseph Friebert (American, 1908–2002) and Robert Von Neuman (German, 1888–1976).
Haas returned to his birthplace to work as a helper for his stonemason uncle, and he had an opportunity to view the work of the architect Frank Lloyd Wright (American, 1867–1959). He spent several years as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan before he moved to New York City in 1968. Haas spent 10 years teaching at Vermont's Bennington College, splitting his time between the school and New York. Haas worked for many years as an Abstract painter who used traditional canvas media. He later developed an interest in drawing and etching the details of late 19th century and early 20th century New York City buildings.
The artist’s first outdoor mural, a commission to paint the cast iron façade at the corner of Prince Street and Greene Street, was completed in 1975. His other notable murals include Fort Worth, Texas' Homage to Chisholm Trail...

RICHARD JOHN HAAS
Richard Haas (1936-) is an American muralist and painter who is best known for architectural murals and his use of the trompe l'oeil style. His urban architecture murals have been commissioned for interiors and exteriors of numerous public and private buildings in the United States. Exterior projects include Chase Field; the Robert C. Byrd Federal Building & Courthouse in Beckley, West Virginia, The Boston Architectural Center, The former Edison Brothers Shoe Storage building, now a Red Lion Hotel in Saint Louis, MO, The Kroeger Building in Cincinnati (Homage to Cincinnatus) The Portland Historical Society, 23rd and Chestnut Streets in Philadelphia, Sundance Square in Fort Worth, Multiple facades in Homewood, IL, the corner of 83rd and York in New York City, a mural on the Con Edison Substation in Peck Slip, New York featuring the Brooklyn Bridge and the former Board of Education building in Brooklyn, NY. Interiors include the New York Public Library Main Branch; the Lakewood Public Library (Ohio); the [[Sarasota County Judicial Center in Florida, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., 101 Merrimac Building, Boston, the Federal Courthouse in Beckley West VA, The Federal Courthouse and Federal Building in Kansas City, KS, The Nashville Public Library history murals and many others. At 1211 North LaSalle Street on Chicago’s Near North Side, a 16-story 1929 apartment hotel converted into a 1981 apartment building, was used for trompe-l'œil murals in homage to Chicago School architecture. One of the building's sides features the Chicago Board of Trade Building, intended as a reflection of the actual building two miles (3 km) south.
Haas is ranked by the Artists Trade Union of Russia amongst the world-best artists of the last four centuries. Originally from Wisconsin, Haas began large-scale outdoor murals in the 1970s in New York City. His murals can be seen in Boston, Chicago, Ft. Worth, Madison, Milwaukee, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pittsburgh, Portland (Oregon), and St. Louis as well as a variety of smaller cities. (from Smithsonian) Haas had a family connection to Frank Lloyd Wright; attending Taliesin for two summers in 1955 and '56; Met Joseph Friebert while an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Influenced by Abstract Expressionism and Post-Impressionism, saw the murals of Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry; met Jack Tworkov and Peter Busa; Haas speaks about fellow artists Richard Serra, James Rosenquist, Malcolm Myers...

57th St. Looking East (View down Sixth Ave/ Fuller BLDG, the Ritz and IBM seen)
By Richard Haas
Located in New Orleans, LA
"57th Street Looking East" was the 2007 selection of the Print Club of New York. Impressions of this image are in the museum collections of: Delaware Art Museum, Virginia Museum of Art and the Block Museum of Northwestern University.
"57th Street Looking East" is a beautiful black and white etching and aquatint of modern Manhattan by famed mural artist and printmaker, Richard Haas. The view, from Sixth Avenue looking east, is one the artist has painted several times. Haas worked on the print during a residency at the McDowell Art Colony in New Hampshire. He said he chose the subject because “there is no street quite like 57th Street.” In the vertical composition, the Fuller Building, the Ritz Tower and the IBM Building are seen in late afternoon sun with a rush hour traffic jam filling the busy street.
Haas became interested in printmaking in the 1950s while a student and is the subject of a catalogue raisonné by Marilyn Kushner entitled "The Prints of Richard Haas, 1970 – 2004" (John Szoke Editions, 2005). He is best known for his architectural studies, which he began in the early 1970s with views that he saw out of his Broome Street studio’s windows in SoHo. However, architecture is also in his blood; his Uncle George worked as a stone mason for Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin, and Haas assisted him there for several summers in the 1950s. Indeed, the artist briefly considered studying architecture before settling on art and art education. His mural work, which has brought him international acclaim, began in the mid 1970s and has led to the creation of numerous trompe l’oeil masterpieces, such as his West Façade, Boston Architectural Center (1989) and Chisholm Trail...
