Tiffany & Co. set of 4 sterling silver open salt cellars with removable blue liners, in pattern number 5438 from 1879. Beautifully adorned with stylized geometric and floral motifs around the rims, they measure 3 2/3'' in width by 2 1/2'' in depth by 1 1/4'' in height. Total silver weight is 13.6 troy ounces. Hallmarks are shown.
Founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tiffany and John B. Young in Brooklyn, Connecticut, as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium", with the help of Charles Tiffany's father who financed the store for only $1,000 with profits from a cotton mill, Tiffany & Co. became a highly regarded brand for jewelry, gemstones, and silver. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver tyg style presentation/champagne cup has a plain cylindrical rounded form onto a rounded collet style base.
The body of this antique cup is encircled with two impressive bands of applied decoration accented with three sets of applied two tier rivet designs, all in the Arts and Crafts style.
This impressive cup is fitted with three C shaped handles incorporating a knop to the centre of each handpiece, encircled with further rivet designs.
The upper heart shaped and lower shield shaped handle terminals are each embellished with two applied rivet style ornamentations.
The cup retains the original gilded interior.
The underside of this impressive antique piece bears the retailer’s mark ‘R&S Garrard, Panton St, London’.
