Robert Indiana's work evolved into hard-edged graphic images of words, logos and typographic forms, earning him a reputation as one of the country's leading contemporary artists.
Indiana is known for using public signs and symbols with altered lettering to make stark and challenging visual statements. In his prints, paintings and constructions, he gave new meaning to basic words like Eat, Die and Love. Using them in bold block letters in vivid colors, he enticed his viewers to look at the commonplace from a new perspective. One indication of his success was the appearance of his immensely popular multi-colored Love on a United States postage stamp in 1973.

This impressively large 1971 lithograph - pencil signed and numbered from the limited edition of only 89, with a stacked LOVE drawing on the front - depicts Robert Indiana's iconic LOVE sculpture (from the permanent collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art) when it was exhibited at Central Park in New York City. This was the turn of the decade of the 1970s - during the height of the anti-Vietnam War protests of the Nixon Administration, when the presence of Indiana's monumental cor-ten steel LOVE in Central Park took on a much deeper significance in New York and indeed the country. This important print is pencil signed, dated and numbered by Robert Indiana from the very small edition of only 89. It also bears a drawing - a flourish - of the word LOVE written by the artist in pencil. Very few of the signed editions of this print remain -- so it is rarely seen on the market. Indeed, eighty nine (89) is a very small edition; however, this oversized print was used for promotional purposes in public places, so very few of the 89 signed and numbered works remain - let alone with the original stacked love drawing. . Robert Indiana, one of the preeminent figures in American art since the 1960s, played a central role in the development of assemblage art, hard-edge painting, Pop art, Neo-Dada, American Modernism and Modern Art. A self-proclaimed “American painter of signs,” Indiana created a highly original body of work that explores American identity, personal history, and the power of abstraction and language, establishing an important legacy that resonates in the work of many contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Keith Haring, Roy Lectenstein, David Hockney, Romero Britto, Richard Hamilton and Robert Rauschenberg who make the written word a central element of their oeuvre.
Robert Indiana was born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana on September 13, 1928. Adopted as an infant, he spent his childhood moving frequently throughout his namesake state. At 14 he moved to Indianapolis in order to attend Arsenal Technical High School, known for its strong arts curriculum. After graduating he spent three years in the U.S. Air Force and then studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Skowhegan School of Sculpture and Painting in Maine, and the Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland.
In 1956, two years after moving to New York, Indiana met Ellsworth Kelly, and upon his recommendation took up residence in Coenties Slip, where a community of artists that would come to include Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, and Jack Youngerman had studios. Indiana, like some of his fellow artists, scavenged the area’s abandoned warehouses for materials, creating sculptural assemblages from old wooden beams, rusted metal wheels, and other remnants of the shipping trade that had thrived in Coenties Slip. The discovery of 19th century brass stencils led to the incorporation of brightly colored numbers and short emotionally charged words onto these sculptures as well as canvases, and became the basis of his new painterly vocabulary.
Although acknowledged as a leader of Pop, Indiana distinguished himself from his Pop peers by addressing important social and political issues and incorporating profound historical and literary references into his works. Robert Indiana created Hope Wall, or Wall of Hope in support of future president Barack Obama in 2008, and the print was published in 2010. This is an extremely rare Artist's Proof - one of only four in the world. It is pencil signed, dated and numbered IV of IV on the recto. The regular edition is only 33. Extremely scarce. This print has appeared on the market fewer than a handful of times over the past decade.

Provenance: private collection - Cincinnati, OH. Numbered by Indiana in pencil lower left. Comes from Indiana's 1996 "Book of Love" portfolio of twelve screenprints of the same image in various colors, originally issued in a black-lettered brown paper-covered folio with accompanying twelve poems. Besides the Arabic and Roman numeral editions, there were also 15 artist's proofs. Technical Director: Peter Engert; Plate Maker: James Harvey; Counsel: Gregory S. Smith, Esq.; Fabricator: Al Hirshson; and Die Maker: York Display. Printed in three colors: white, gray, and dark gray.
The "Book of Love" project was conceived by the artist as a portfolio that would make a definitive statement on his masterpiece "LOVE", fulfilling his original vision as both a poet and a painter. The prints in the portfolio were created by Indiana as illustrations for his own love poems, written circa 1958-1973. The prints were produced in silkscreen using oil based paints on a newly created fine art paper that he found perfect for rendering "LOVE", which demands a precise line and radiant true color. The poems each have a highly raised embossment of "LOVE", trapped in colors, just below the title. Each print is hand pencil signed, and each poem hand pencil initialed by the artist.

Indiana was also an accomplished printmaker and is known for a series he produced in collaboration with poet Robert Creeley.
