Robert McIntosh Paintings

American, 1916-2010

For more than seven decades, artist Robert McIntosh expressed his joy for life through drawing and painting. His approach to visual art ran the spectrum, from bold, monochromatic landscapes to vibrant renderings that are alive with color, never confining his work to a single style. Whether using surreal abstract scenes to evoke ephemeral thought or realism for portraits, McIntosh brought the canvas to life with masterful skill.

McIntosh was born in 1916 in Vallejo, California, near San Francisco. By the time he was 10, he had a passion for painting. His creative interests intensified when his family moved to Stockton, California, when he was 12, just a few blocks from a local art museum. He visited the museum often, feeding his desire for artistic knowledge.

In 1934, McIntosh received a scholarship to the Pasadena Art Center School of Design. Soon, he was taking commissions to paint portraits. Not long after, notable museums in the state began exhibiting his work, including the San Francisco Museum of Art (now the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art) and the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento.

During the Great Depression, McIntosh worked at Disney Studios, creating background art for animated films. In 1940, he married fellow Disney artist Helen Nerbovig. The military drafted him in 1942, and he worked for the U.S. Army Air Force at Hal Roach Studios. After the war, McIntosh split his time between freelance work for animation studios, like Warner Bros. and Hanna-Barbera, and work on his art, which was exhibited annually at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

McIntosh continued to paint and sketch throughout his career, consistently producing works of diverse media. He experimented with Expressionism, Cubism, Impressionism and collage. He lived and worked in Bel Air, California, until he died in 2010. Through his many decades of creative expression, McIntosh left a body of work that continues to be treasured by collectors today.

"The Red Silo" Winold Reiss, Rural Regionalist Landscape, Sunny Day on Farm
By Winold Reiss
Located in New York, NY
Winold Reiss The Red Silo Signed lower left Watercolor on paper 20 x 29 inches Winold Reiss (1886-1953) was an artist and designer who emigrated to the United States from Germany in 1913. Probably best known as a portraitist, Reiss was a pioneer of modernism and well known for his brilliant work in graphic and interior design. A compassionate man who greatly respected all people as human beings, he believed that his art could help break down racial prejudices. Like his father Fritz Reiss (1857-1915), who was also an artist and who was his son's first teacher, Winold Reiss was artistically moved by diverse cultures. The elder Reiss focused on folk life in Germany while Winold drew substantial inspiration from a range of cultures, particularly Native American, Mexican, and African-American. As did many young aspiring artists, Winold Reiss studied with the esteemed painter and teacher Franz von Stuck at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which was at that time a center of the decorative and fine-arts movement. It is not known whether Reiss met E. Martin Hennings...

Circus Wagons
By Millard Sheets
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This watercolor is part of our exhibition America Coast to Coast: Artists of the 1930s Circus Wagons, 1927, watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower left, 10 x19 ¾ inches (sight), provenance includes Stary-Sheets Art Gallery (Gualala, CA); J. Ralph & Louis Stone Foundation; presented in a newer metal frame behind glazing About the Painting Millard Sheets was only twenty years old and in his third year of studies at the Chouinard Art Institute when he painted Circus Wagons. Despite his youth, Sheets was already an accomplished artist who had publicly exhibited his work and won prestigious prizes. Within several years, he would have his first solo exhibition at one of Los Angeles’ premiere galleries and become a painting instructor at his alma mater. In Circus Wagons we already see Sheets deft handling of the watercolor medium and his interest in the California Scene. In this case, Sheets captures a back lot view of a traveling circus, a subject he sometimes returned to, including in a color screen print in the collection of the National Gallery. Sheets made a career by painting what he knew and observed firsthand. This approach allowed Sheets to capture with authenticity the details of each narrative. Even with a narrowly limited palette and an economy of brushstrokes, Sheets effectively depicts the southern California scene with its strong and mysterious shadows, as well as the workers and circus animals. Seen through the hindsight of his six-decade long career, Circus Wagons offers a fascinating insight into the early development of California Scene painting which would by the mid-1930s become the best recognized style on the West Coast. About the Artist Millard Sheets was the dean of California watercolorists. His list of accomplishments is so extensive that his entry in Who was Who in American Art is over forty lines. Born in Pomona, California, Sheets became a painter at an early age, winning a prize at the Los Angeles County Fair in 1918. By the mid to late-1920s, Sheets became a regular at art exhibitions in the western part of the United States, winning several additional prizes before he reached the age of twenty-five. Sheets studied at the prestigious Chouinard Art Institute from 1925 through 1929 with Frank Tolles Chamberlin and Clarence Hinkle and had his first solo show with Los Angeles’ Dalzell Hatfield Gallery in 1929. During the 1930s, Sheets was invited to exhibit at almost every major American Museum and in many ways, his work came to represent the California watercolor school...

The Tulips, Art Deco Still Life on Canvas of Tulips in a Vase in an Interior
Located in Cotignac, FR
French Art Deco still life of a vase of tulips in an interior by Auguste Mallard. The painting is signed bottom right and presented in a period patinated wood frame. A colourful and strong painting of an interior view, a table with books and as the centre piece a beautiful blue ceramic vase with twisted handles holding a magnificent bouquet of brightly coloured tulips. Mallard has captured the abandon of the blooms in the vase, the way tulips twist and furl raising and lowering their beautiful colourful petals. The colours of the flowers really stand out against the more muted tones of the background, curtain and table. A very elegant and stylish painting. This painting has the feel of some of the still life works from the same period by Tamara de Lempicka who was a contemporary of Mallard painting...
