Shelter Serra Paintings
American, b. 1972
Shelter Serra is a multidisciplinary artist whose artworks probe the resonance of imagery and objects he has pulled from the wake of American visual and material culture to reexamine. Serra’s compelling sculptures of ubiquitous or iconic commercial products remade in bronze, resin, copper, or gold, are conspicuous replicas of recognizable forms. Serra’s paintings similarly announce their existence as reproductions of reproductions: halftone dots, hand copied typeface, mimicked printing glitches, the tones of a black and white photograph, or the vibrant colors of a thermograph, signal that the subject has been rendered, filtered through an image-making process employed for a particular end. By reproducing and recontextualizing these images and objects, Serra examines the cultural paradigms which led to their creation and commodification. The utility, absurdity, or desirability of the source image or object is contended with and re-assessed via Serra’s handmade proxies. His recreations provoke a conceptual consideration of the assigned, symbolic status of the original – fashionable, wasteful, threatening, luxurious, lowbrow – they test the limits or longevity of the original’s aura. If Serra’s choice of subject matter is perceived as a commentary on the ‘stuff’ this country generates, it is the viewer who has imposed this subtext. In the form of re-presentations of already manufactured products or reproductions, Serra’s artworks have a symbolic function. They point back to an original, and to the culture that gave that original meaning.to

Homemade Hermes Birkin Bag ( Pink ) 2015 by Shelter Serra

Homemade Hermes Birkin Bag ( Kelly Green )
2015,
15”x14.5”x1.5” inches unframed, 18.75 "x 18.75 x 2.5 framed
Cast Resin, Edition of 15
Also available in Kelly Green, White, Gold and Silver. The frame is a white shadow box frame with plexiglass.
The Homemade Hermes Birkin Bag is a sculpture that celebrates the beauty, and status, that the docents of fashion have bestowed upon coveted objects and accessories as such. In a Duchampian gesture of representation, the artist has created an object that has been “elevated to uselessness”, yet reveals much about our society’s infatuation with consumption and materialism. Cast in resin the sculpture becomes an apropos trope of our time, a perfect conversation starter.
Shelter Serra’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings explore mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes subject matters that are both common and recognizable: a Campbell's Soup Can, a copper plated baseball hat, and a Hermes Birkin bag...

Sumi ink and pencil on Japanese Washi Paper
Mario, the main character from the Super Mario Bros. video game is one of the most recognizable images and a true archetype of our contemporary society. This traditional hand-drawn portrait of Mario in ink on paper, renders his likeness akin to a snapshot, or cell, removing him from the digital realm and freezing him in our tangible world of reality.

Map of Paris
2014
18.5”x20.5”x.75” inches
oil and ink on canvas
The painting, “Map of Paris”, is based off a popular postcard of Paris. By simplifying the city into a landscape of symbols, streets, and locations, the beauty and history of Paris replaced by a set of codes, creating both mystery and confirmation. Just as the Impressionists reduced their surroundings into a series of dots, this painting attempts to reduce the experience of Paris into a postcard map.

Blue Boy of the North Atlantic - Octopus on Antique Nautical Chart Gyotako Style
By Jeff Conroy
Located in Chicago, IL
A small octopus is inked in the Japanese style of Gyo-Taku print making. Using sumi ink to "print" the octopus, the artist then embellishes it with colored pencil to convey an extraordinary dimensionality. By printing it on a nautical chart, in this case a pilot chart of the Northern Atlantic Ocean from 1945, the artist achieves a beautiful aesthetic. The artwork is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options.

Gyotaku - A Japanese word translated from "gyo" meaning fish and "taku" meaning stone impression and is believed to get its inspiration from Chinese stone rubbings of calligraphy, which then gave rise to printing . This tradition dates back to the mid-1800s and was used by fishermen to record their catches, but has also become an art form of its own. Prints were made using Sumi ink and Washi paper. It is rumored that Samurai would settle fishing competitions using Gyotaku prints...

"I Can Experience Joy and Happiness" Abstract Butterfly Painting Acrylic Canvas
By Ash Almonte
Located in New York, NY
The Butterfly series for Ash began as a sentiment to her late Father. Butterflies began to appear in unexplainable ways after his passing, the artist later discovered that Butterflies represent spiritual rebirth, transformation, change, hope, and life - she goes on to say: "The butterfly series draws inspiration from Rivera's quote 'Butterflies can't see their wings. They can't see how truly beautiful they are, but everyone else can.'" After coming to the fruition that Butterflies pose as not only a symbol for beauty and rebirth, Almonte felt a feeling of deep comfort. Her passion for sharing this message of hope and renewal through her colorfully diverse canvases is achieved with resilience leaving her audience glimmering much like the inner voice and the spark of Joie de vivre that fuels her purpose in life to create. This piece is painted on thick gallery wrap canvas and is signed lower right and on verso, it comes with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 48 x 48 inches
Inspired by vibrance and an optimistic outlook on life, Ash Almonte is recognized for her distinct abstract expressionistic style. She is best known for her series of Chandeliers, Butterflies, and Fashion from the Seventh Avenue Design District. Almonte's award-winning works can be found in private and permanent collections around the world. She is motivated by change, compassion for others, and miraculous phenomena that can impact others for good.
Her flair and admiration for fashion and art have been a staple of her life since childhood. As a young girl, she would experiment using anything she could find to make art; from tearing apart bushel baskets at her father’s fruit stand, to tearing out old magazine clippings from her mother's magazine collection; anything and everything around her could potentially be used to create. She would continue to seek out opportunities throughout her young adult years, as her love for fashion grew, allowing her to collaborate with celebrity stylists creating looks for top billboard artists, as well as apparel worn at New York Fashion Week for designers Sherri Hill...
