Shingo Francis Abstract Paintings
American, b. 1969
Shingo Francis grew up in Los Angeles, immersed in the intense light and vast ocean vistas of life in southern California. Like many LA artists, Francis became fascinated with the ever-changing qualities of light and how it affected one’s perception and experience of the world. As the son of painter Sam Francis, Shingo also happened to grow up in the heart of LA’s nascent artworld, where artists such as Larry Bell, Robert Irwin, James Turrell, Craig Kaufman and Peter Alexander were utilizing new materials to explore the phenomenology of how we perceive. These pursuits became loosely known as California’s Light and Space movement and for many of them, their artwork was as much a catalyst for exploring perception as it was an art object unto itself.
Francis has continued this pursuit with a series of gossamer-like paintings with colors that appear in constant flux, changing as one moves about them. Utilizing interference paints – a medium of crushed, titanium-coated mica that refracts light - the colors in these pieces shimmer and shift depending on the angle of the viewer and the reflection of light. Rectangular shapes conform to the shape of the canvas, creating a framework of change as viewers move. What one sees becomes inherently tied to their particular perspective and the character of the light at any given time.
The necessity of the viewer’s presence and engagement with the seeing and experiencing of the “work”, is a driving interest for Francis. He intends these paintings to counter the notion that the virtual reproductions of artwork on our phones, tablets and screens can replace, or even approximate, the actual physical and emotional experience of being “present” with a work of art.
Shingo Francis has been the subject of numerous national and international exhibitions. He was awarded the Fumio Nanjo Award from the Mori Museum in Tokyo and is in numerous museum and institutional collections, including The Frederick R. Weisman Foundation in Los Angeles.
Francis received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Pitzer College in Claremont and a Master of Arts degree from ArtCenter College of Design, in Pasadena, California.to

Blue & Grey Green Plan: Abstract Geometric Framed Painting in Cool Toned Palette
By Donise English
Located in Hudson, NY
Abstract geometric painting with a cool toned palette of green, blue, and grey with accents of black and white against a sea foam green colored acrylic wash background
"Blue and Grey Green Plan" made by Hudson Valley artists, Donise English, in 2022
Graphite, colored pencil, and acrylic painting on vellum
24 x 18 inches unframed, 31 x 25 x 1.5 with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and simple black moulding
Signed, verso
Excellent condition and ready to hang
This abstract geometric painting on vellum was made by Hudson Valley based artist, Donise English, in 2022. The composition begins with a blue green toned background of acrylic wash. A grid of box-like patterns in sky blue, green, grey, and black with white line work are stacked to create an irregular shape or an "imagined city grid", says the artist. The painting on vellum is complemented by a simple black frame with an 8-ply white mat, non-glare plexi, and wire backing. It's in excellent condition and ready to hang.
About the artist:
Donise English emphasizes lines, grids, and fields of subtle color to evoke imagined places and invented structures. While precise lines and straight angles are often associated with themes in architecture and urban planning designs, English conveys a geometric motif guided by intuition rather than a ruler. Variations on grids retain flaws and unmistakable traces of the artists’ hand; her style of draftsmanship shies away from intellectualism and instead makes her compositions feel very personal. A central checkerboard formation floats over a ground of pastel color or washes of grey or cream. Each design is intensely intricate, incorporating gouache, acrylic, pen, graphite, ink and colored pencil. The artist recently retired from her decades career teaching at Marist College and is now devoted full time to her art making.
Artist Statement:
My work is about the way visual diagrams present information that describes how something is made or the way it is. I am interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. I use gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define my pictorial space. For each piece I create a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure.

Utilizing interference paint, a medium with mercurial properties, Francis dials into the phenomenology of perception to produce works that resonate with subtle shifts of color to extraordinary effect. Their nuance invites a quiet curiosity, provoking a sense of wonder as one moves Zen-like into an exploration of engaged contemplation on the cyclical nature of time and liminal space.
With a Japanese mother and American father, Mako Idemitsu and Sam Francis, highly regarded artists themselves, Shingo Francis grew up between Tokyo and Santa Monica, immersed in art and absorbing the sensibilities of both cultures.
Early professors noted the young artist’s eye for color and interest in the color theory of Joseph Albers. On a trip to Paris, Francis sought out the great abstract painter, Joan Mitchell, for her feedback on his work. She told him, “You can paint, but you’re just illustrating. It’s just empty. If you really want to paint, you’re going to have to reach deep inside and pull it out.” This had a profound effect and inspired Francis to think about his work in more intimate, contemplative terms.
Accordingly, Francis’ work investigates and synthesizes traditional Japanese philosophies and aesthetics with Southern California practices. He employs many Japanese concepts such as: “wabi-sabi”, an acceptance of transient and austere beauty; as well as “Yūgen”, a concept of profound and mysterious beauty, often associated with the subtle and hidden. The concept invites viewers to engage more deeply with the art and environment, encouraging a contemplative and engaging approach to perception. Francis harnesses these observances into a process-based practice of abstraction, with clear connections to Light and Space and Southern California’s influences. Observing environmental permutations are a part of this practice. Francis notes that the northerly atmosphere in Japan casts a cooler light which is bluer, while the Southern Californian sun is warmer offering a fuller spectrum.
In Liminal Presence, Shingo Francis has utilized the uniquely, expressive properties of interference paints to exploit their ever-shifting character. The paint contains very small beads of mica particles suspended in an oil medium. This creates an optical effect, with the beads splintering the spectrum of light to produce color, similar to the way rainbows prism...
