Yves Saint Laurent Suits, Outfits and Ensembles

French, 1936-2008

French designer Yves Saint Laurent pioneered “cross-design” in fashion, taking inspiration from street trends to modernize haute couture.

Saint Laurent was the first to launch a ready-to-wear label, YSL Rive Gauche Prêt-à-Porter. He was the first couturier to open boutiques for both men and women. Using traditional menswear fabrics and designs for women, Saint Laurent also literally cross-dressed, giving men and women alike chic pant suits, elegant tuxedo jackets and urban safari gear.

By blurring gender-specific design, Saint Laurent empowered individual style while creating a scissor-sharp fashion aesthetic of sensual ease and beauty. Many of his designs are today considered timeless classics. Saint Laurent also consistently used Black models, like Mounia, Iman and Naomi Campbell, and he drew endless inspiration from different ethnicities and cultures, in no small part because of his Algerian roots.

Born to French parents in Oran, Algeria, in 1936, Saint Laurent went to Paris at age 17 to study fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Just two years later, in 1955, his remarkable sketches were shown to Christian Dior, then the world’s reigning couturier, who hired him immediately.

Surprisingly soon thereafter, Dior publicly chose Saint Laurent as his successor, which sadly proved prescient when the fashion legend died unexpectedly, in 1957. A mere slip of a youth, the 21-year-old Saint Laurent was nevertheless up to the challenge. He shook the traditional couture clientele to its core with youthful silhouettes and styles like the A-line trapeze dress that hung with seeming effortlessness from the shoulders, the antithesis of the pinched waists and molded skirts that had been all the rage after the deprivations of World War II.

After a mandated spell in the torturous French military, Saint Laurent suffered a nervous breakdown and was dismissed by Dior in 1962. Out of the ashes rose the Age of Yves. With Pierre Bergé, his then-lover who became his lifelong business partner and friend, the designer founded Yves Saint Laurent YSL to encompass prêt-à-porter, or ready-to-wear. In 1966, they opened the first YSL Rive Gauche women’s boutique in Paris, followed soon thereafter by YSL Rive Gauche for men. Saint Laurent had given birth to a global brand.

His revolutionary Mondrian mini dress from 1965 is a core element of his fashion biography. It is a prime example of how Saint Laurent, an avid art lover and collector, looked to painters, from Goya to Picasso, Ingres to Matisse, for inspiration.

With its pure lines and hues, Mondrian’s ground-breaking 1935 color-block painting Composition C transmutes beautifully into a dress that is highly valued by collectors of contemporary fashion and widely copied commercially to this day. The design is the epitome of Saint Laurent’s aesthetic, requiring a meticulous hand-piecing of each color block so that, despite the body’s curves, the visual plane is as flat as a canvas when the garment is worn. Mondrian’s purity met its match in Saint Laurent.

“I am no longer concerned with sensation and innovation, but with the perfection of my style,” Saint Laurent said four years before retiring, in 2002. After a long period of ill health, he died at his home in Paris on June 1, 2008.

1970s Yves Saint Laurent Rich Purple Taffeta Ruffle Skirt Set
By Yves Saint Laurent
Located in London, GB
Well documented, this is an absolutely classic and desirable piece of Yves Saint Laurent evening wear dating from 1978-1983. The designer revisited this look several times during the 70s and 80s and we feel that this is quite possibly an early 80s piece. In a beautiful deep purple hue of silk taffeta, this set has some lavish design details and very generous amounts of fabric in the ruffle collar and deep cuffs. The floor length skirt is full and has an unusual asymmetric ruffle flounce so that no length is equal, juxtaposing the formal blouse element. These ensembles always look great tucked in or accompanied by an original YSL rope...

Documented Yves Saint Laurent Pleated Silk Chiffon Ensemble, Spring-Summer 1979
By Yves Saint Laurent, Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche
Located in Geneva, CH
A wonderful addition to any summer wardrobe, this SS1979 runway Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche color block two-pieces can be worn both together and separately. Composed of a vibrant purple dress and a mauve overskirt, both pieces are cut from lightweight silk-chiffon and finished with silk satin edges (used as well for the straps of the dress). The dress closes on the left side with a simple button while the overskirt is tied thanks to the satin silk ribbon. Unlined, this ensemble is accordion-pleated to create a flowy movement when you walk and turn. To emphasize the Greco-Roman inspiration, wear it with minimal sandals ! Fits approx. : US 0-4 / FR 34-36 Measurements (taken flat) : Dress -> Width (armpit to armpit) approx. 39.75 cm (15.6 inches) Length (shoulder to hem) approx. 99.5 cm (39.2 inches) Total length approx. 103 cm (40.6 inches) Overskirt -> Length (waist to hem) approx. 97.2 cm (38.3 inches) This item has been professionally cleaned, pressed & carefully inspected by a couture-trained seamstress before being sold. Vintage 1991 Givenchy Haute Couture Green Pink Satin Strapless Jumpsuit & Jacket
By Givenchy
Located in Beverly Hills, CA
Givenchy, the name itself evokes glamour, refined elegance, simplicity and style. Givenchy's trademark of sculpted lines and luxurious fabrics make his work easily recognizable. This bold jumpsuit ensemble, dating back to their 1991 haute couture collection, is a beautiful example of his brilliance. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; luxurious emerald-green and magenta-pink lined silk satin. I adore the boned strapless bodice with over-sized cummerbund belt. The flattering nipped waist met by straight-legged trouser pants create the perfect amount of drama to this timeless piece. The matching hourglass peplum jacket complete with wide lapel-collar and over-sized pockets finish this garment off with a perfect femme fatale vibe. With this ensemble, you have one complete outfit or amazing separates! Since its inception in the early 1960s, the Yves Saint Laurent style has changed and grown with the times. The overarching mood of Saint Laurent styles is gender-blurring and openly embraces the idea of women wearing trousers and other garments that were more associated with past menswear. No matter the garment, the look is always high-end and luxe. You’ll find a large collection of Saint Laurent from many of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

There are a few tell-tale signs you can look for to determine whether your YSL bag is real or fake. Authentic Saint Laurent bags have a serial number tag. Authentic bags will have the tag sewn into the lining around the edges. The serial number is 12 digits separated by a dot. Newer versions of YSL bags will have a serial number that is three letters, followed by 10 digits and they’re separated by a dot. In addition, make sure to thoroughly examine the bag for flaws and imperfections. A true Yves Saint Laurent bag will be flawless.
