Yves Saint Laurent Clutches

Vintage Yves Saint Laurent bags have long been considered essential to any true fashionista's wardrobe. The celebrated French designer was the ultimate fashion savant, and just as many Yves Saint Laurent clothing creations are today considered timeless classics, YSL tote bags, crossbody bags and other handbags and purses are sleek and covetable, with styles that range from edgy to elegant.

Saint Laurent pioneered “cross-design” in fashion, taking inspiration from street trends to modernize haute couture. By blurring gender-specific design, he empowered individual style while creating a scissor-sharp fashion aesthetic of sensual ease and beauty.

After working as the successor to Christian Dior, Saint Laurent founded his brand in the early 1960s with Pierre Bergé, his then-lover who became his lifelong business partner and friend. The designer often drew inspiration from painters and became famous for his revolutionary Mondrian minidress.

As far as YSL handbags are concerned, the Sac de Jour, the Loulou, the Shopper tote and the Sunset bag are all modern and sophisticated staples. The Muse, which appeared in 2006 and soon was on the arms of actresses and models all over the world, is roomy and versatile. (Sadly, the house has since discontinued the design.)

Yves Saint Laurent is also well known for its monogrammed clutches and tasseled bags. On authentic YSL handbags, the hardware won’t be discolored and shouldn’t be vulnerable to oxidization. The brand’s bags frequently feature the iconic YSL logo, which experienced a resurgence in the 2000s, thanks to then–creative director Stefano Pilati’s designs and advertising campaigns that positioned the logo front and center. Under creative director Hedi Slimane, the house’s ready-to-wear collection was rebranded as Saint Laurent in 2012.

Yves Saint Laurent Red Black Passementerie Gripoix Hearts Clutch/ Belt Bag YSL
By Yves Saint Laurent
Located in Boca Raton, FL
The suit, the safari jacket, the peasant dress—Yves Saint Laurent was a master at seeing the high-fashion potential of that which others might have dismissed. This passementerie purse is an example of his design genius. Passementerie, the art of making elaborate trimmings such as galloon, gimp, tassels and fringes, flourished from the sixteenth century when guilds were first established in France to the early-twentieth century. On clothing and furniture, these handcrafted embellishments were a sign of wealth and rank. With modernity, however, they fell out of favor and became passé. Yves Saint Laurent turned that perception on its head. For his fall/winter 1976/1977 Russian-themed collection, which was inspired by the ornamental beauty of Léon Bakst’s costumes for the Ballet Russes, he accessorized the lavish looks with tasseled and braided belts hand-finished by the storied passementerie makers. The runway show revived a taste for excess and made passementerie details a brand signature. The half-moon shape of this mini passementerie belt bag is crafted from lustrous ruby red cord interlaced to form its exterior. A variety of gold and Gripoix hearts bejewel the flap closure. The bag can slide of the belt so you can carry this as a clutch and wear the belt without the bag attached. Pair this special piece with evening wear or use it as a belt bag on the weekends. Measurements: Belt: 26-32 inches Bag width: 8 inches across top Height: 5.5 inches Depth: 1 inch This vintage Yves Saint Laurent passementerie...

Authentic bags will have the tag sewn into the lining around the edges. The serial number is 12 digits separated by a dot. Newer versions of YSL bags will have a serial number that is three letters, followed by 10 digits and they’re separated by a dot. In addition, make sure to thoroughly examine the bag for flaws and imperfections. A true Yves Saint Laurent bag will be flawless. Yes, Yves Saint Laurent is a luxury brand. Founded in 1962 by Yves Saint Laurent and his partner, Pierre Bergé, the brand is regarded as one of the foremost fashion labels in the 20th century.

By blurring gender-specific design, Saint Laurent empowered individual style while creating a scissor-sharp fashion aesthetic of sensual ease and beauty. Many of his designs are today considered timeless classics. He shook the traditional couture clientele to its core with youthful silhouettes and styles like the A-line trapeze dress that hung with seeming effortlessness from the shoulders, the antithesis of the pinched waists and molded skirts that had been all the rage after the deprivations of World War II.
