Jesús Rafael Soto was a Venezuelan artist known for his kinetic sculptures and large-scale installations. Like Alexander Calder and George Rickey, Soto’s delicate and responsive constructions react to external stimuli and changes in the atmosphere, as seen in his work Penetrable (1990). “Artistic creation is a force which should preferably be directed towards the exploration of space, of the universe, of the infinite realities which surround us, but of which we are hardly conscious,” Soto once mused. Born on June 5, 1923 in Cuidad Bolívar, Venezuela, he studied at the Escuela des artes plásticas in Caracas from 1942–1947 and later served as the director of the Escuela de bellas artes in Maracaibo, Venezuela until his move to Europe in 1950. Settling in Paris, he associated with the Op Art artists Victor Vasarely and Yaacov Agam, as well as members of the ZERO group such as Otto Piene, Jean Tinguely, and Heinz Mack. Private Collection, Milan C.O.A by Pierre Vasarely, Vasarely Foundation. Victor Vasarely was a French-Hungarian artist credited as the grandfather and leader of the Op Art movement. Utilizing geometric shapes and colorful graphics, the artist created compelling illusions of spatial depth, as seen in his work Vega-Nor (1969). Vasarely’s method of painting borrowed from a range of influences, including Bauhaus design principles, Wassily Kandinsky, and Constructivism. Born Győző Vásárhelyi on April 9, 1906 in Pécs, Hungary, he briefly studied medicine, but after two years he dedicated himself to learn academic painting. In the late 1920s, Vasarely enrolled at the Muhely Academy in Budapest, where the syllabus was largely based on Walter Gropius’s Bauhaus school in Germany. After settling in Paris in 1930, Vasarely worked in advertising agencies to support himself as a graphic artist while creating many works including Zebra (1937), which is considered by some to be one of the earliest examples of Op Art. During 1970, working at the University of Havana, Jorge is assigned as a cartoonist in the Department of Animation and Design. This audiovisual media center had an extensive graphic library, where Jorge discovered what would later become the goals of his creativity and his artistic motivation for life. Among the publications of the IDEA magazine that he used in everyday work as a cartoonist and animator he found articles and paintings by the Hungarian-French Optical Art artist 'Victor Vasarely' (1906-1997). From this work the personal challenge and inspiration of the artist Jorge Garcia was born. With his natural talent to recognize drawing lines, the abstraction of the figure, and the tones and contrasts of light and volume, Jorge was satisfactorily accepted within the group of artist who worked in the center as animators. In 1971 he ventured as an optical artist with the work called "Interference I" at a local contest of his municipality. Competing alongside works by renowned Cuban artists such as Nelson Dominguez, Orlando Lara and Roberto Fabelo, in the galleries of The National Museum of Fine Arts, "Interference I" was successfully exhibited for more than 5 months, as part of the "VI Juvenile Hall of Plastic Arts "and its success led to the birth of an artist, JorGar. JorGar continued in such fashion, difficult to explain, beyond being understood, a creator of many works whose complexity can only be observed through abstraction and the vigilant game of interpretation, which conform to the pleasures of the restless space and the transformation of volume.
