By Brenda Putnam
Located in Philadelphia, PA
In an era when artists were capturing the exoticism and athleticism of modern dancers, such as Richmond Barthé's depiction of Féral Benga dancing with a large, curved sword or Paul Colin's drawings of Josephine Baker with her skirt of bananas, this sensuous presentation of a nude male dancer with a long spear stands out. The bronze was sculpted in 1926 by Brenda Putnam, who is best known for a series of bronzes showing children at play, often placed in gardens and parks. However, Putnam was ambitious to do more, leaving academic sculpture behind as she collaborated with architect Paul Philippe Cret to create the Puck Fountain for the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., executed a number of portraits in bronze, exhibited at the 1932 Olympics in Los Angeles, and created "The Crest" -- consisting of a a large male nude swimming...

Rare and striking, this Art Deco bowl by the renowned Fulper Pottery features its signature flambe glazes inside the bowl -- in shades of caramel, green and blue -- in addition to three Medieval-influenced shields applied to the rim, each with knight's helmet and star motifs. Founded in 1809, Fulper produced utilitarian ware in the Trenton, New Jersey area for many years, but in 1910 Martin Stangl became the ceramics engineer and artistic director, producing a line of Art Nouveau and Art Deco pieces...

Truly fine and extraordinary, this large and heavy bronze bookend, beautifully sculpted, cast and chased, depicts a sleeping male nude figure, his arm resting on a Classical mask, his body curled around an owl, and his left arm clasped by a small child. Given that the owl represents knowledge and wisdom, and the mask indicates art and theater, the sculpture is suffused with allegory and meaning. The sculpture is not signed, but is stamped 530/101 and shows an engraved inventory number, probably added by the first owner. The bronze has a lustrous patrina, and sits on an oxblood marble...

Bold and striking, this unique low bowl or plate depicts a form of Triton that is part man, part horse and part fish -- known as an ichthyocentaur -- who is cavorting in the sea with a dolphin and starfish, with rows of waves below and around him. The artist was Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep blue color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light blue and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...

By Carl Elmberg
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Although Sweden is known for its furniture and artisanry in a stylized Art Deco manner, often characterized as Swedish Grace, it is not so well known that Swedish artists led the way in creating fine pieces from humble materials such as cast iron or pewter. This humidor with high-relief sculpture in cast iron by Carl Elmberg is a fine example. The figure of a nude male archer chasing a deer, accompanied by a female nude figure in a wooded, idyllic setting, exhibits a beautiful texture and deep color thanks to the material Elmberg chose. The piece was cast by the famed Näfveqvarns Bruk foundry, which in the 1910s collaborated with the Swedish Society of Craft and Industrial Design to sponsor a competition which encouraged new and modern designs by artists such as Anna Petrus, Erik Grate...
