An incredibly powerful Romantic landscape of the Alpine mountains with a waterfall cascading into a valley, the river pouring over the rocks and curving around the bend, flowing past a pair of figures seated on a grassy noll with a transcendant unearthly lighting that creates a focal point of the couple. It is as if the clouds have opened up just to shine light on them, emphasizing the glorious day the man and woman are experiencing on this leisurely hike through nature.
Painted by Guido Hampe in 1881, the painting was acquired by Charles S. Shultz, president of the Hoboken Bank in Montclair, New Jersey where it remained in his home until its deaccession from the home in 2021. The home was particularly interesting for its total originality, the interior looking almost identical throughout its entire life to how it appeared at its inception in 1896. Enclosed in the collection of images is a shot of the painting in situ over the living room fireplace as captured by the Montclair Magazine article on the home in 2020.
The work is signed in his typical script lower right "G. Hampe / 81". It remains housed in the original and substantial giltwood frame, fully restored and a very powerful presentation.

Condition Report:
A fine presentation ready to place: frame with minor wear/abrasion/loss; canvas with trace grime in the mountain tops and sky and all-over moderate craquelure. Surface bright and vibrant. Retains the original frame that we have had professionally restored with trace regilding and inpainting, some elements recreated; the restoration has preserved the antique nature of the frame and all restoration has been toned to match the aged aesthetic of the frame. Painting was acquired with its apparently first surface, an incredibly thick grime layer that significantly obscured the image - this was likely due to its placement above the fireplace in the Charles Shultz...

A rare example of Pierre Lenordez's early work, this fine sand-cast bronze model of a halting stallion showcases the powerful animal as he is stopping his forward motion, rearing slightly as he shifts his weight to his back legs. The model is beautifully chased and a wonderful hammered texture to the hair and texture from the original wax mold replicated in the bronze under the translucent brown surface patina. The model is signed on the back corner of the naturalistic base in his typical script, "P. Lenordez".

A rare and exciting pair of Grand Tour busts after Antiquity, each is executed in bronze and finished in a Herculaneum black patina with hints of verde in the underlying surface by the foundry of J. Chiurazzi of Naples. Foundry seals are located on their shoulders verso.
The first is a fine cast of Homer after the marble bust of Antiquity formerly in the Farnese collection and currently in the permanent collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. It depicts the aged Greek poet and author of the Illiad and the Odyssey as a bearded man dressed in a tunic with a ribbon holding back his hair while concerned wrinkles line his forehead. His eyes are empty and devoid of anything, the absence alluding to his blindness while the sheer intensity of his spirit overwhelms the viewer. His simple garment are a reminder of his poverty.
The second bust known as "Pseudo Seneca" is cast after the original bust of antiquity found in 1754 at Herculaneum in the Villa of the Papyri, the home of Lucius Calpurnius Piso Caesoninus, father-in-law of Julius Caesar. The estate was buried in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. An incredibly fine one-piece corner cupboard formerly acquired at Sotheby's in 2013 for $ 15,000. The original and beautifully worn surface is incredibly lively with a rich texture in the symmetrical brush strokes with the natural rubbing through the paint from over two-hundred years of gentle handling. It is crafted in one piece from pine primary woods and poplar secondary woods and features a nine-light glazed upper door with beautifully molded astragals that opens with a replaced brass knob to reveal an interior divided with two fixed shelves. The lower portion of the cabinet is missing its knob and opens to reveal the single shelf that evenly divides out the space. And most attractive is the size, which is delightfully diminutive and allows it to be a part of any space without overwhelming the interior. An untouched treasure.

A moving study of a very young man hugging and kissing his father goodbye as the French Navy has arrived at his home to collect him for conscription to military service. His mother grips a hankerchief in one hand as she watches her teenage son with a complex expression that bridges grief and perhaps anger. His younger brother likely does not grasp the totality of the situation, dragging behind his feet a toy boat. The bright colors and vibrant life of the rural farm is juxtaposed against a deep sorrow.
The present example dates from 1888 and was mentioned in the Gazette anecdotique et Littéraire of the same year. It is included in the ongoing catalogue research project on the works of Julien Le Blant by Dominique Formaz and is documented at Leblant. com
JULIEN LE BLANT
Julien Le Blant studied under E. Girard and made his debut at Salon in 1874. His work was regularly recognized, ultimately receiving the gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. He was made Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1885. The body of his work largely focuses on military scenes, particularly of the French Revolution, but also scenes of the First World War later in life. He completed hundreds of illustrations for a great number of books, including Les Chouans (Honoré de Balzac), Chevalier des Touches (Barbey d'Aurevilly), and Premier Grenadier de France (Paul Dérouléde) to name a few. His work is held in major museum collections and institutions around the world.
For serious collectors of militarism and of the Romantic painters of the period, this is a simply outstanding investment grade selection. Works by Julien Le Blant very rarely make their way to the the open market.

An exquisite and very rare casting of an Aberdeen-Angus bull, an unusual and distinctive breed of cattle from Scotland, this sculpture by Isidore Jules Bonheur is almost without a doubt cast by the foundry of his brother-in-law Hippolyte Peyrol and a rather early model as well in light of the distinctive construction method. In her text on the selection of 46 animal bronzes in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Eleanor Luciano notes regarding this model that "Bonheur is never recorded to have been to Scotland, where he would have seen this unusual breed. Rosa Bonheur painted in Scotland, and its seems likely that Isidore would have drawn the idea for this bull either from one of her sketches or from an agricultural show in France. The animal's rich mane and strong modeling make this one of the most successful." Notable is the very fine surface patination which exhibits a glassy finish with a complex range of colors presenting in the body of the bull, overall being medium brown but augmented with an underlying reddish hue against auburn highlights. The base is signed "I. BONHEUR" in the typical manner.

This lovely early 19th century Regency chiffonier cabinet features a rosewood veneer over all primary surfaces and is hung with original bronze mounts throughout. The pair of locking doors feature original latticework brass grillwork and they open to reveal an upholstered interior with two fixed shelves. The top raises an upper shelf on turned pillars, the rosewood shelf with a pierced bronze gallery surrounding the back and sides. A fantastic and rather unusual wrought-iron wine storage rack styled as a domed chest, it features wide shaped straps welded to curved and squared bar with curled iron elements throughout. The front of the chest retains an early lock and key, opening and dropping down on hanging chains to give access to the 28 bottles of wine that can be stored inside. It retains a wonderful early surface with chaotic oxidization and the effects of rust throughout the overall green and blue-ish patina. Circa the late 19th to early 20th century.
