Qing Dynasty brocade civil rank badge with silver pheasant, likely intended for the front of a child's robe. This unusually-sized badge was probably made for an older child of a civil official of the fifth rank. It features a silver pheasant, which can be recognized by its five distinctive long, scalloped tail feathers. The bird, with one foot raised and its wings outstretched, stands on a rock surrounded by green waves couched with gold thread, facing the red sun...

Qing Dynasty brocade civil rank badge with silver pheasant, intended for the front of a child's robe. This badge, made for the child of a civil official of the fifth rank, most likely his eldest son, features a silver pheasant, which can be recognized by its five distinctive long, scalloped tail feathers. Vividly colored pair of 19th century civil rank badges (buzi) decorated with an egret, denoting a civil servant of the Sixth Rank. The badges are worked in flat stitch embroidery on a dark blue silk background, with the bird tinged slightly pink, and the border a bright gold color. The bird is perched on a rock surrounded by green waves and blue clouds. Attached to the front and back of a ceremonial robe, rank badges were woven in pairs with identical imagery. One was divided vertically up the center to attach to the front of a robe with a center opening. A badge featuring a bird identified the wearer as a civil official, possibly because of birds' literary associations. Each rank was represented by a different species, and while there were slight variations over time, by the Qing Dynasty the order from highest to lowest was: (1) crane, (2) golden pheasant, (3) peacock, (4) wild goose, (5) silver pheasant, (6) egret, (7) mandarin duck, (8) quail and (9) paradise flycatcher. Wives were also entitled to wear badges of their husbands’ rank on black surcoats for official occasions. Women's badges can be distinguished from the men's by the placement of the red sun...

Set of six blue and white Qing dynasty porcelain plates from the Nanking Cargo shipwreck. A large cache of porcelain and other merchandise was discovered on the wreck of a Dutch East India Company ship, the Geldermalsen, which sank in the South China Seas in 1752 and was discovered in 1985. The ship had been bound for Amsterdam from Canton when it crashed into a reef and sank along with its cargo of tea, raw silk, porcelain and gold ingots. Some 235 years after it set out on its journey, the cargo was recovered by Captain Michael Hatcher and sold at Christie's in Amsterdam in 1986. These delicate porcelain plates are decorated in the charming "Boatman and six-flower border" pattern, which shows a fisherman punting his boat within a broad river landscape, with a two-story pavilion beside a pine tree, a Chinese parasol...

Blue and white Annamese porcelain brush washer encircled by a parrot. Recovered from the wreck of a 15th century ship off the coast of Hoi An, among a group of sunken porcelain known as the Hoi An Hoard, found 230 feet below the surface of the water. Typical of the Hoi An pieces, the brush washer has a zoomorphic form, decorated with pale cobalt blue and exhibits the signature chalky, slightly ivory white body with a fine glaze. Through very few strokes, the painter evokes a very large personality for a small bird, exhibiting an almost child-like delightfulness. The bird is sharp-eyed and retains a vaguely bemused expression as its hooked beak pushes in the edge of the bowl. The designs on its wing are free, direct and supple. In good condition besides the fading characteristic of shipwreck porcelain...
