Markus Haase, Faceted Bronze Dining Chair, USA, 2018
By Markus Haase
Located in New York, NY
Taking inspiration from the twisting forms of seaweed and other natural materials, Haase hand-carves each element of his unique dining chair before casting it in his New York City studio. The bronze components are then welded together by the artist and polished to a mirror finish. Shown upholstered in white pony hair, the chair can be upholstered in a variety of materials. The back-rest can also be created in hand carved wood. Combining a mastery of traditional sculpting techniques with a contemporary, material-driven approach to design, Markus Haase...

Sophie Coryndon, Float, UK, 2018
By Sophie Coryndon
Located in New York, NY
Float, a large carved wallhanging, draws inspiration from the unicorn tapestries in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Created in the 1500th century, the tapestries known as millefleurs (meaning a thousand flowers) were woven in many different workshops in Northern France and Flanders. They often included small animals and birds among the flowers. Coryndon’s magnificent work is adorned with hand-tooled flowers and insects that are cast and gilded before being arranged on a deep navy blue wood panel. The individually crafted flowers, leaves and insects are carved to mimic the goldwork embroidery commonly found in church vestments...

Sophie Coryndon, Dossel Diptych, UK, 2018
By Sophie Coryndon
Located in New York, NY
Dossel Diptych, a large-scale wall hanging, is composed of two panels of layered honeycomb cast in Jesmonite, which have been embellished with cold enamel resin to simulate honey and then gilded and highly patinated. The overlapping layers of the panels hang, emulating ornate textiles. At once colossal and delicate, Dossel beautifully preserves the fragility of its source material. Coryndon became interested in bees after learning about the current global crisis facing the insects. In an effort to capture abandoned “ghost ship hives,” Coryndon employs the lost-wax method, an ancient and labor-intensive technique. Dossal is the term for an ornamental cloth suspended behind an altar. It is sometimes referred to as an alter screen. Dossel is inspired by the Pala d’Oro a golden altarpiece of the treasury of S.Marco, Venice. Todd Merrill Studio began representing UK artist Sophie Coryndon in 2016. Imaginative and innovative, Coryndon has forged a successful career of combining traditional craftsmanship and specialist finishing techniques in a fine art realm. Often material and process driven, employing multiple disciplines including bronze casting, painting, embroidery, and sculpture, her work has found a large audience with collectors and designers worldwide. Coryndon spent her formative years working alongside her father at the legendary Coryndon Cabinet Makers in England. Coryndon’s work, inspired by elements of the natural world, is rooted in historical aesthetics. Coryndon especially draws inspiration from the influential the 18th century Neoclassical designer and architect, Robert Adams who was described in his obituary as, “a genius in elegant ornament.” The Adams style incorporated elements of classical Roman design alongside Greek...

Damian Jones, Nant Coffee/Cocktail Table, USA, 2018
By Damian Jones
Located in New York, NY
Damian Jones’s Nant Table functions perfectly as a coffee table or cocktail table. Its drum shaped form is sheathed in a mosaic pattern of hand-cut and laid brass “tiles.” Each tile has been patinated in varied colors and shades creating facets that reflect light in a dynamic arrangement. The table’s surface, in claro walnut has been precisely fitted in a radial pattern, dyed in a rich green color and finished in a flat lacquer giving the table a leather-like look. Its slight domed top gives the work the unusual appearance of an ottoman. Welsh born Damian Jones creates hand-made, unique furniture with a wide range of influences – from 1920s and 30s Deco...

Hannes Grebin, Cozy Chair, DE, 2018
By Hannes Grebin
Located in New York, NY
Berlin based, Bauhaus educated, multi-disciplinary designer Hannes Grebin has created a group of upholstered seating inspired by the questioning of traditional domestic decor. Applying the principles of Cubism to design, Grebin masterfully deconstructs the traditional shapes and detailing of a “dad’s chair” and the “family room sofa” into simplified geometric shapes and interlocking planes. Working with a master upholster in Berlin the resulting seating is hand-crafted with the highest possible level of materials and workmanship. He describes the pieces as “living sculptures, which puts the traditional views about comfort and taste into question.” The “dad’s chair” a wing back style that dates back centuries has been re-analyzed, broken down and reassembled into Grebin’s “Cozy Chair...

Markus Haase, Arizona Dreams, USA, 2010
By Markus Haase
Located in New York, NY
Haase refined his sculpting practice studying under Europe’s preeminent masters of stone carving, restoring centuries-old Gothic cathedrals across Northern Germany for over a decade. These experiences, combined with his fresh and impressive eye for design, allow Haase to create his dynamic, expressive works. Haase demonstrates his sculpting virtuosity through his designs that imbue wood and stone with a remarkable sense of fluidity and movement. Carved wood assumes qualities of drapery, while marble suggests energy and vigor. His dynamic sculptural lighting defines a new artistry for the twenty-first century, managing to sculpt light itself. As Todd Merrill describes, “Markus Haase...
