Rare and Exceptional Meiji Period Hardwood Exhibition Display Cabinet
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
The square central section is glazed, mirrored and rotates, with additional inner frames, all above a frieze with a disguised drawer, surmounted by a pagoda roof with upswept eaves, pendant bronze bells, aoi mon and serpentine dragons, the finial comprising a ho-ho with open wings; the base comprises four deeply carved cabriole legs with ho-hoshoulders and feathered claw feet resting on minogame whose tails support a circular spinach-marble shelf, with a similar marble set into the solid stretcher, decorated throughout with cloud scrolls, tendrils, inro and many auspicious symbols, the creatures’ eyes rendered in mother-of-pearl, inscribed ‘Behold fire’, Yokohama, Japan, circa 1900. Provenance: Fletcher’s Auction House, Houston, Texas. October 9-11 1981 Catalogue. Lot number 583 and envelope illustration. Footnote: This is an intriguing cabinet in many ways. The inscription “hino yojin” indicates a place for candlesticks or other light sources in a grand interior, however the inner drilled frames within the glass doors, and the fact that the whole display section rotates, would suggest something of great value and artistic merit was displayed inside. The carvings are related to the mythological Palace of the Dragon God of the Sea, (Ryugu-jo). Depending on various versions of the legend this underwater palace was made from pure crystal, each of the four sides had a different season and one day in the palace was equal to a century in our world. The most famous legend refers to Urashima Taro who was carried down to this magical place on the back of a minogame or giant turtle...

Captain Sir George Collier’s Presentation Silver Entree Dishes by Richard Cooke
By Richard Cooke
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Captain Sir George Collier’s presentation silver entree dishes and covers by Richard Cooke, London 1803, each plain rectangular with gadroon borders, covers with detachable vine twist handles, the covers engraved: ‘Presented by the Old Madras Insurance Company to Captn. Collier, Commander of His Majestys Sloop ‘Victor’, for his persevering & gallant conduct in chasing for two days, partially engaging & ultimately sinking the French National Corvette ‘La Fleche’ of superior force while advantageously anchored at the Mahé Islands.’ Dimensions approx.: 150 x 290 x 200mm / 6 x 11 ½ x 8 inches Total weight approx.: 3513 grams / 112 oz. troy. Footnotes: These silver dishes were presented to Captain Sir George Collier KCB (1774-1824) for destroying the 22-gun French corvette La Flèche whilst commanding Victor, 18 guns, in the Seychelles on 5 September 1801. After escorting troop transports into the Red Sea ahead of the British invasion of Egypt, Victor fell in with La Flèche off Diego Garcia. After an initial engagement, the corvette escaped to windward only to be found again four days later. A short but fierce action ensued during which the corvette caught fire, grounded on a coral reef and sank before a prize crew could secure the ship. As reward, the Admiralty made Collier post captain and gave him command of Leopard, 50 guns. Born in London, Collier entered the Royal Navy in 1784. As a midshipman, he was wrecked off Madagascar in 1792 surviving among the natives of that island for six months before being rescued by a passing Portuguese brig. Unfortunately, the brig was immediately captured by a French privateer and for two more years, Collier was confined as a prisoner of war on Mauritius. Returning to service in 1795, he was given his first command in Suffolk Tender. Following the Peace of Amiens, Collier commanded the Sea Fencibles at Liverpool. After accompanying the expedition to Copenhagen in 1808, for which he was knighted for delivering the admiral’s dispatches, he saw action, and was wounded, supporting the military Campaign in Spain. After the war, Collier was made commodore on the African station where he was employed suppressing the slave trade with such rigour that he was elected an honorary member of the African Institution, founded by William Wilberforce...

Fine Pair of George III Mahogany Wine Cisterns Attributed to Gillows
By Gillows of Lancaster & London
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other. Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. PLates 342 and 343 show pedestals with a similar arrangement of shelves and drawers. Thomas Sheraton explained the functions of dining room pedestals in his 'Drawing Book' of 1793: 'IN spacious dining rooms the sideboards are often made without drawers of any sort, having simply a rail, a little ornament...
