Eileen Cooper Art

British, b. 1953

Eileen Cooper’s paintings and woodcut prints are dreamy and humorous, with a man giving a woman a foot rub or a woman tenderly cradling a rabbit.

While British figurative art has a reputation for trending toward the dour, the dark or the tortured — think Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach and Francis Bacon — in Cooper’s world, a couple drifts happily on a sea of love; sisters embrace; and cats, bears, and foxes show up as benign companions.

Cooper has said that she has a head full of stories: “Mythology, fairy tales, Bible stories, fables and early special-effects movies — they’re all part of my work even if it’s not obvious. I always try to look spontaneous.”

Alongside her artistic practice, Cooper has maintained a teaching career at institutions including Central Saint Martins, the Royal College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools.

Cooper became an Academician and Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools in 2010 (the first woman Keeper since the RA’s founding, in 1768), and in 2016, she was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to art and art education.

French 19th Century Oil on Canvas Blue and White Music Allegory Cherub Painting
Located in Firenze, IT
This romantic French 19th century allegoric oil painting on square canvas has a sky blue background, a fluffy cloud fills the central part of the painting where a woman is lying down playing the lyre, while a graceful cherub seems to twirl over her. This oil on canvas painting represents the allegory of music - with a woman dressed in classical clothes and a putto- a very popular theme during all the neoclassical age, with its lively scene inspired by the Rococo period. The composition creates a awesome trompe-l'œil effect thanks to the color palette scheme. Well painted white and gray shadings (chiaro scuro) that stands out from the light blue background in typical grisaille style. This painting originally was an over door frieze...

Wild (love cats)
By Darlene Cole
Located in Montreal, Quebec
Childhood, a reoccurring theme in Darlene Cole’s work, is represented by prepubescent girls and boys, engaged in some type of action. Without adult supervision, these activities confer on Cole’s children an adult-like aura, empowering them. The artist cites Neil Postman’s 1982 book about the decline in innocence in American culture The Disappearance of Childhood as a text that informs her work. In it, Postman argues that communications technology, such as the invention of the television and later, the Internet, contributed to children losing their innocence, thus transforming them into young adults. A source of inspiration for Cole are the works of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets and critics, founded in 1848. They studied nature attentively, employed vivid colours and depicted unconventional-looking women. Just like in Pre-Raphaelite works, the girls in Cole’s paintings embody enigma, distance, and beauty. The past, in general, is a great source of inspiration for the artist. Cole’s cottage, or ‘artist’s retreat’ as she calls it, was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since she kept all the original furniture and linens intact, the cottage, on the side of a lake, seems to belong to the past. Nature, another omnipresent theme in Cole’s work, is in many works represented by flowers, such as pink David Austin roses...

"Spring Aspen, " Oil Painting
By Stephen Day
Located in Denver, CO
Stephen Day's (US based) "Spring Aspen" is an original, handmade oil painting that depicts a forest of Pine and Aspen trees coming to life with new green buds of leaves and the thicket of the forest floor beginning to grow. Stephen Day was born in Sheridan, Wyoming, and, while growing up he lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aspen Colorado, and Durango, Colorado. He always felt the wonderfully unique beauty of the west but until he became an artist he really didn't know how to fully respond to that beauty. Day is now a full-time artist living in Taos, New Mexico. Working mainly in oil he paints various subjects from life but the landscape is his first love. He says of his working philosophy, "I paint almost exclusively from life trying to capture the feeling and the mood of the subject before me. This work philosophy forces me to paint quickly to get a spontaneous and fresh response, because everything around us (including ourselves) is in a constant state of change." Day frequently paints on location and uses these smaller paintings to create larger studio paintings. Artist's Background: 1976 - Bachelor of Arts Degree, McMurry College, Abilene, Texas 1980 - Master's Degree, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, Texas Studied at the Art Students League of Denver with Bruce Cody...
