Patchwork CabinetBy Paul Evans

About the Design

Sculptural and tastefully decorative, Paul Evans’s Patchwork cabinet is an audacious exploration of the several styles for which the furniture maker is known. A sideboard that Evans (1931–87) produced for Directional — a North Carolina furniture manufacturing company that became the catalyst for some of Evans’s most well-known designs — the cabinet’s clean lines and simple silhouette belie the maker’s mid-century influence, while its rough-hewn texture and traditional craftsmanship are nods to brutalism and the American Arts and Crafts movement. An enthusiastic and skilled metalworker, Evans produced the Patchwork collection, which essentially began as wooden boxes, with “patchwork” copper, brass and pewter coming together with nails. The series includes cabinets, sideboards, coffee tables and more.

The New Jersey-born Evans was raised in Pennsylvania, but he left in the 1950s for the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School for American Craftsmen in New York. Later, he ventured to the famed Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan, where he studied sculpture, metalwork, furniture design and jewelry-making. Evans found his way back to Pennsylvania, where he eventually began to collaborate with Directional, which produced his Cityscape, Sculpted Bronze, Argente and Patchwork furniture series. In addition to the cabinet, Evans created hundreds of pieces for the Patchwork line from 1964 through the 1970s. Each one is signed and dated, ensuring the authenticity of its handmade nature, a detail upon which the maker was insistent. These pieces, along with the rest of Evans’s work, are still in high demand and count a number of high-profile clients, from famous musicians to design enthusiasts, as collectors.

Biography: Paul Evans (American , 1927-1993) Born in Brooklyn, New York, Paul Evans is an American furniture designer and sculptor best known for his work in American Furniture design and the American craft movement. His work was influential to many furniture manufacturers in the second half of the 20th century, most notably Directional Furniture. He often used non-traditional materials and techniques like sculpted metal furniture. His work with Directional Furniture was extremely fruitful and during that time he started several series including their Argente, Sculpted Bronze, and Cityscape series. Evans started his career making copper chests and sculpted steel cabinets -- both of which are highly sought after today. Paul Evans’s work with Directional Furniture changed the relationship between creative directors and the companies they worked for. His name helped sell pieces, and he was consciously aware of that fact. As a proponent of modernism, Evans became an innovator in the furniture world. His patrons were often part of the New York elite, and he was able to enjoy sustained success, helped in large part by his ability to evolve with the times -- from craft-based in the 1950s to more flashy pieces in the 1970s and 1980s. His work was mostly recently featured at the Michener Art Museum and was the subject of a 2014 documentary. What kind of art does Paul Evans make? Paul Evans was primarily a furniture designer and sculptor. Though he started within the American Craft movement, Evans is hard to pin down stylistically. An expert metalworker and sculptor, several of Evans pieces were heavily influenced by the shipbuilding industry. As he moved through his career, his pieces became more stylistically diverse, but through it all there is a dedication to craft and function. Much of Evans work is best showcased in his work for Directional Furniture. He had several iconic lines including Patchwork Copper, Pewter and Brass, and the extremely popular CItyscape Series. In the 1980s, Evans branched off on his own with his Think Tank series. He opened his own showroom in New York City, but eventually retired in 1987. How did painter Paul Evans get started? Paul Evans was born on May 20th, 1931 in Newton, Pennsylvania. He studied sculpture and silversmithing at a number of colleges including the Philadelphia Textile Institute, the Rochester Institute of Technology, and the School for American Craftsmen. In the early 1950s, he attended the Cranbook Academy of Art in Michigan, later moving back to Pennsylvania to work with his mentor and guide, Phillip Loyd Powell. Together they began a business heavily influenced by the work of George Nakashima. Powell worked wood pieces, while Evans dedicated himself to metal. Evans burst onto the scene in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the American Craft movement exploded in popularity. From there he parlayed his popularity into a lucrative career with Directional Furniture. How much are Paul Evans pieces worth? Paul Evans furniture pieces can vary in value greatly, from a few thousand dollars on the low end to over $200,000 on the high end. In 2015 a Paul Evans wavy...

Paul Evans Patchwork Copper Flip-Top Dry Bar Cabinet for Directional, circa 1967
By Paul Evans, Directional
Located in Los Angeles, CA
This rare patchwork copper flip topdry bar by Paul Evans was crafted in the mid-1960s by Directional. A collectors item and piece of design history, this stunning liquor cabinet was handcrafted with patinated pieces of copper, brass, and pewter which have been artistically welded and nailed in a patchwork style resting on a matching plinth base atop casters, allowing the cabinet to be easily moved around and floated throughout the room wherever your party takes you. What separates this one apart from other examples are the finishing touches. This example has a top that is finished in the same copper clad as the front, the back is finished and so are the sides, and the interior side of the two doors are finished as well. So you can float this in the middle of the room and even when you open the doors to your magnificent collection of liquor and glassware or other possessions, your cocktail cabinet still maintains that 'finished' look. Under the flip topis a black laminate bar-top and interior also finished in black. Inside the double sided copper clad cabinet doors are a left and right interior storage space divided by a black wooden divider. Within both sides are adjustable wooden shelves all finished in black to match the rest of the interior. This genius design by Paul Evans took into account how subtle details can make an atmosphere so much better for entertaining and the complete blackout of the interior spaces make this really pop under entertainment night lighting. This is the rare cousin to the sought-after patchwork cabinet, in similar form with slate top and oversized round door pulls, which we also have in our current collection, see our other listings or contact us for more details on our Paul Evans Patchwork collection. We also carry other Paul Evans designs, including Cityscape, Deep-Relief, and the Sculpted Metal Collections and more. This eye-catching Brutalist patchwork drybar cabinet...
