Encompassing his appeal for international inspiration, YSL blended Eurasian styles with his usual bright color combinations during the Fall/Winter 1989 collection. Mr. Saint Laurent's ability to make globally inspired designs by melding several aesthetics into one beautifully articulated garment is a hallmark of the renowned designer. From the 1989 collection, this ensemble is done in a beautifully detailed silk brocade fabric creating a motif of whimsical butterflies and florals in vibrant colors of orange, yellow-green and cerise on a ground of a serene ocean blue. Lurex threads throughout give this ensemble an added majestic feel. The jacket is constructed in a classic 80s style with squared shoulders and a tapered sleeve. It is tailored nicely though the bodice and gives a nipped waist that is accented by a voluminous peplum that is attached on a slight angle which adds interest to the silhouette and allows for a more flattering fit. The ankle-length skirt is simplified to balance the drama of the top. It has a less structured body which allows for a gentle flouncing. A shocking thigh-high slit on the proper right revealing the exuberant pink lining introduces a dash of sexy shock factor to this ensemble. This John Galliano runway ensemble from Spring-Summer 1988 ‘Blanche Dubois’ combines two main themes from the collection: the bow and polonaise skirt. The bodice is made of cotton with rigilene boning and features a large frontal bow, the hero style of the collection. The bow not only serves as a design element but also allows the wearer to rest their arms inside the bow loops, creating a distinctive silhouette. This was worn in the opening look of the show and was also depicted in the backdrop of the runway in an illustrated portrait of Marlene Dietrich. The skirt is comprised of a high-waisted boned mid-section with a corresponding belt, and a draped navy gabardine skirt. Inspired by the robe à la polonaise of 18th century France, the skirt features a ‘Blown Away’ hem which is caught into a band with button holes. This allows for customisable polonaise folds and drapes by buttoning the hem to the underside of the garment at different heights. This is a vintage 1980's black cotton pique skirt suit designed by Thierry Mugler. The peplum style blazer has black and white striped upturned cuffs, collar and bows. We love that the peplum itself is lined with the same black and white stripe fabric so it shows with movement. The jacket snaps up the front and is fully lined. The slim skirt is also marked a size 36, and is lined and closes with a back zipper and snap. We love Thierry Mugler so we were thrilled to acquire this from an estate we recently handled.
