Halston Original Costume Designs ex Martha Graham Estate Matted & Framed
This piece is three Halston drawings of costumes for Dances of The Golden Hall by Martha Graham. They are illustrations for outfits worn by the principal dancers Elisa Monte and David Brown. This ballet debuted in 1982. The drawings are in excellent condition. A review by Anna Kisselgoff appeared in the New York Times on June 10, 1982 and I have included it below. Measurement Frame Length 20" Width 16" ''Dances of the Golden Hall'' is to this mind, a thoroughly exciting and rich work. It should not be mistaken for a pastiche of Indian dance, although its imagery is consciously related to the erotic temple imagery of India. And yet the idiom itself its totally Miss Graham's. Completed but about to be revised when Miss Graham fell ill recently, the work nonetheless operates on the usual Graham multiple levels. In Hindu theology, the God Shiva dances in the golden hall of the temple at Chidambaram and creates the world. Kali, his consort, is often depicted dancing on his body, and it is with this image that Miss Graham closes her work. She gives us the erotic act as union with the divine, the act of love as amplified by a chorus of couples. With gold tiaras by Halston and red twisted curtains in the center, the work emerges as unexpectedly Baroque. Yet Elise Monte as the goddess figure has a mesmerizing unblinking force, with David Brown fine as her worshiper. Stanley Sussman's conducting and Beverly Emmons' lighting all evening were excellent and contributed to the outstanding performance Takako Asakawa gave with David Hatch Walker, Christine Dakin, Jaqulyn Buglisi, Terese Capucilli and Jeanne Ruddy and Sophie Giovanola in ''Seraphic Dialogue.'' The Cast DANCES OF THE GOLDEN HALL: A DANCE OF CELEBRATION, music, Andrzej Panufnik; choreography, Martha Graham; costumes, Halston; lighting, Beverly Emmons.
