About the Item
Exquisite and unique water pipe made of metal with cloisonné decorations, made in the late 19th century in China. It has a refined decoration of lotus flowers that stand out against the dark background. Simple structure, the main and decorated part is where the water is poured; it has a lid with a stamp in Chinese characters. Large stylized mouthpiece for smoking, as well as two punches for tobacco, joined by a chain. Commonly called an opium pipe, it was used to smoke tobacco or moist tobacco (narghile). The use of the water pipe for smoking was introduced into China at the end of the Ming Dynasty (syllabus XVI), along with tobacco, through Persia and the Silk Road. During the Qing Dynasty, it became the most popular method of smoking tobacco, and was popularized in the Republic.
