About the Item

At the heart of an art exhibition, an extraordinary resin display panel stands proudly, a silent tribute to Raniero Gatinoni's iconic moments of Italian fashion in the 1990s. Precisely crafted, it has four thin holes at its ends, seamlessly anchoring it to the gallery walls, as if it were an altar to an era of elegance. As the eyes approach, a vision of pure simplicity and timeless beauty emerges from the depths of the shrine. A black dress, elegant in its minimalism, takes center stage. It exudes an aura of understated sophistication, a testament to the enduring appeal of classic design. This dress carries a secret, for it bears the label of the illustrious Raniero Gattinoni, a name that resonates in the annals of Italian fashion history. The dress, like a siren's call, beckons admirers to linger, to pay homage to an era that shaped the world of haute couture. Its lines are clean and unadorned, a canvas that allows the wearer's grace to shine. In its simplicity lies a profound statement: that true elegance requires no embellishment, for it is a quality that comes from within. Beneath the dress, a delicate logo, seemingly crafted from paper, comes into view. It takes the form of an angel, an ethereal symbol reminiscent of the iconic Fiorucci logos that graced the fashion landscape of the 1990s. This logo, like a guardian spirit, whispers of the era's trends and the cultural currents that influenced fashion. The artist behind this mesmerizing creation sought to achieve the impossible—to imprison a dress and, in doing so, bestow upon it the gift of immortality. In the confines of this resin shrine, the dress becomes more than a garment; it becomes a relic, a symbol of an era, a bridge between the past and the present. This exhibition panel, a harmonious blend of artistry and fashion, is an ideal vessel to showcase as an installation. It serves as a time capsule, a portal to an age of elegance and innovation. As you stand before it, you cannot help but feel the emotions it evokes—the reverence for a bygone era, the admiration for timeless design, and the gratitude for the artists and designers who shaped the tapestry of Italian fashion history.

Saz by Surjit & Adarsh Gill Silk Cut Out Dress Dress, 1970s
Located in Boca Raton, FL
Surjit and Adarsh Gill, the sister duo from India, launched Saz in New York in 1969. Their beautiful, feminine designs featured embroidered silks and were, as noted in an article for The New York Times, “Based on the assumption that in every crisp, tailored woman there is a mysterious enchantress yearning to come out at night.” Their pieces seemed to fulfill this desire, with an early collection being described as “…the sort of Arabian Nights dream the assembled women had been hoping to see come true.” Rather than simply reproduce the Sari for the West, the sisters created a “mini-sari” inspired by the traditional garb, which favored short bodices paired with long skirts. This was one of their most recognizable silhouettes, along with triangular hem lines and pants paired with tunics. Done in 100% hand woven sheer silk, this Saz by Surjit & Adarsh Gill Dress is whimsical and seductive at once. The dress derives inspiration from the sister’s “mini-sari”, with its fitted peek-a-boo bodice and maxi length skirt that reaches a few inches above the ankles. Featuring an abstract pattern of white diamonds, squares, circles, and rectangles on a black ground, the dress has an underlayer of opaque black silk which brings the print to life. The sheer bodice begins with a high neckline and long sleeves, providing the perfect canvas for the fitted underlayer of black silk beneath it, featuring a triangular neckline and a midriff baring cut...
