Circa 1860
Provence
A printed cotton patchwork extracted from a Provençal Courtepointe which has been unquilted and dates from the French Second Empire period. Patchwork of 110 squares of printed cotton alternating polka dots, stripes, flowers and chintz printed with a roller and a wooden block. Framed in green and yellow cotton, the stitching still shows its interlacing pattern. Provençal patchworks are rare and very often earlier than British and American patchworks. No defects to report. Very good colour and condition.
