LimitedEdition Vase AperitifGlass JeanNouvel 2002 Signed for French LiqueurSuze

About the Item

As a signed and 2002-dated limited edition, French architect and furnishings designer Jean Nouvel was commissioned to create this yellow-accented vase or aperitif glass for one of the oldest and most popular herbal liqueurs in France, Suze, which is a gentian-root bitter recognized by its citrine color. While the over 120-year-old brand was young, it was widely associated with contemporary art since 1912 when Pablo Picasso depicted a yellow Suze bottle in his collage, "Verre et bouteille de Suze". Selling out shortly after this Daum-made model was produced with his namesake Paris-based Jean Nouvel Design, the clear cylinder features a one-inch thick base and a distinct yellow poured-glass underside recalling Art Deco-period vases and barware. The colored flat disk reflects onto the concave glass interior one-inch above so that the diffused yellow makes a Suze drinker appear to never run out of the liqueur despite emptying the liquid contents. The yellow bottom of the glass is etched with Nouvel's dated signature in reversed French text that can only be read when peering deeply into the two-inch opening. The clear upper part of the glass is imprinted with "SUZE" to otherwise call attention to this word and/or its texture only when taking a sip. Remarkably, the yellow reflection from the base can illuminate this text and the upper rim only when the clear glass is tilted towards the drinker. The functional glass is otherwise a decorative object for a sunlit window or vase. Characteristic of Nouvel's commissioned designs, the glass is meant to be considered in the context of its surroundings, which in this case would be a Suze bottle and bright light. About the concept for the glass, native Frenchman Nouvel is quoted online by his design firm: "I wanted to create a glass that would be an extension of the bottle, so this glass is elementary. It's linked in nature to the shape of the bottle, which has remained unchanged for 100 years, and to its color. I wanted to express the essence of Suze, hence the idea of a yellow glaze, which gives the impression that the glass is permanently filled." Traditionally, the French chill the aromatic Suze in a tall glass filled with many ice cubes, which they prefer to drink in the summer before a meal. Still based in Paris, Jean Nouvel (b.1945) is arguably the most famous and beloved living French architect. Among many prestigious awards for his buildings, interiors and furniture, he won in 2008 his profession's highest international accolade, the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and was given in 2001 his first major retrospective exhibition at the contemporary-art museum Centre Pompidou--the year before he designed this glass.
