About the Item
This is an old piece of Japanese bentwood craft.
A bentwood container is made by bending very thin boards of cypress or cedar into a circular or oval shape and attaching a base. The joints between the boards are sewn together with strips of cherry bark or other materials.
This is made from cypress and has a subtle fragrance.
There are many types of bentwood containers, and they were used in everyday life as rice containers, water buckets, ladles, steamers, trays, and more.
It is thought to have been used in a private home in the Tohoku region, but its exact purpose is unknown. As it has a lid, it was probably used as a container for something.
The era name "Kyoho" is written on the back of the lid, suggesting it dates to 1716-1736 during the Edo period.
Over the years, it has turned black with soot.
