Striking multi-technique work by Robert Natkin - 9397

About the Item

Striking multi-media work by Robert Natkin. From a large collection of Natkin's works from his early and middle periods. Not examined outside the frame. Glazed with museum glass. This allows the detail to “pop” and almost look 3 dimensional. Likely a monograph (only one made-not part of a series) enhanced with acrylic paint overlay. Natkin used a variety of techniques which he mixed together seamlessly throughout this period that might include scratching, the use of nets, textured sponges or rollers that he developed himself to get the effects he wanted, plus the use lithography in creative ways. He was always experimenting and adding and changing and shifting and experimenting. Some of his original multimedia works from this period are mistaken for multiple series lithographs which are typically produced in runs of 6 to 150. The multiple lithographs are almost always numbered, though I’m not sure that they are always marked in this way. Another sign that a piece is an original multimedia original work is that there is hand painting on top of the underlying layer, which is usually lithography. Sometimes the underlying lithography is taken from a multiple run and Incorporated into a new unique work by painting over the underlying layer and creating a completely different work of art. This process of constantly changing and morphing is part of what makes Natkin so wonderful to follow throughout his 60+ year career. I have a series of three multimedia pieces which have the same underlying lithography which has been reused in slightly different forms and then overpainted in different ways so that the result is three completely different multimedia works. If you step back, however, you can see that they all began as the same work. I also have an etching that he took and turned upside down and turned into a lithograph with a different color scheme. Finally I have a pair of 1970s paintings in the style of the work being offered here that are very closely related, and which could have started as the same work. These will all be offered for sale in the near future, and they will be kept together in the sets of closely related works, as they area fascinating window into the creative process of one of our great mid-century abstract, impressionist painters. I also was fortunate to have been contacted by the widow of one of his professors from when he lived in Chicago and had attended the Art Institute of Chicago in the 1990s. She had three portrait paintings that Natkin had done in the first half of the 1950s, which her husband had traded with her husband as they had become friends. They had sat on mounted for 45 years in the back of her closet, and she was getting old and was selling off her things. (Her husband had long passed ). Unfortunately, I lost the documentation and the name of the professor, who had written at least one of the significant essays on Natkin that with his major exhibitions. It is on one of my old computers from the 1990s which no longer works and is sitting in the back of my garage . One of these is signed, the two others are not, but it is clear to my eye that they are all done by him. I will be listing at least two of these by the summer, so please check back if you are interested! Good Size at 26" by 36" for the image alone, and 32" by 42" including the frame.
