Japanese Green White Porcelain Vase by Contemporary Master Artist
Located in Takarazuka, JP
Exquisite Japanese contemporary Kutani porcelain vase, intricately hand painted on an elegantly shaped porcelain body, a signed masterpiece by the third generation master porcelain artist in traditional Kutani. His grandfather started as a porcelain artist 140 years ago faithfully protecting the characteristics of traditional Kutani fine porcelain. The creator of this piece, the third generation artist, continues to keep this tradition alive and is among a very small number of Kutani porcelain artists who still create traditional Kutani pieces. Traditional Kutani porcelain called Kutani Ware has a history of over 360 years. The spirit of Kutani ware emerges as highly skilled craftsmen draw hairline images on white porcelain, which are tempered with heavily applied ornamental glazes. These glazes, when fired in the kiln, are converted into five colors of enamel, green, yellow, blue, purple and red. When they are combined with the bold designs and free-flawing drawings, elaborately worked pieces are created. This stunning piece depicts three scalloped panels with flower and bird motifs on white background. The panels are surrounded by intricately designed scrolling vines in white on deep green. The based boasts a detailed pattern created by fine lines in black set against a traditional kutani green...

Jug from Phds Wikramaratna Islamic Pottery Collection
Located in Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire
PHDS Wikramaratna (PH) was born in Ceylon in 1916 and moved to London in 1937 where he gained a first class honours degree in Engineering. He returned to Ceylon at the outbreak of war and settled back in the UK following the war. PH gradually built up an extensive collection of Middle and Far Eastern ceramics becoming a member of the Oriental Ceramics Society in London. Several of his pieces were loaned for lectures and display and with his extensive knowledge and resource chose his pieces carefully. Over the years PH gifted many examples to museums, including The British Museum, Victoria & Albert, Ashmolean and Fitzwilliam. PH died in 2010 and our client was fortunate enough to acquire a substantial part of his collection. A fine Islamic earthenware jug of squat rounded form standing on a narrow rounded foot and potted in a light red clay decorated in green turquoise glazes with black painted floral...

Impressive Terracotta Funerary Procession - Ming Dynasty, China '1368-1644 AD'
Located in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Nuevo Leon
Impressive Funeral Ensamble of 10 Terracotta Glazed Figures in green and caramel colors depicting a votive procession with a palanquin, his four carriers, a horse, a stableman, two musicians, and an offering carrier. This ensemble is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, and Certificate of Expertise by Jean-Yves Nathan - Specialist in Asian Arts for the CEDEA (The European Confederation of Art Experts). Burial figurines of graceful dancers, mystical beasts, and everyday objects reveal both how people in early China approached death and how they lived. Since people viewed the afterlife as an extension of worldly life, these figurines, called mingqi, sometimes referred as “spirit utensils” or “vessels of ghosts” disclose details of routine existence and provide insights into belief systems over a thousand-year period. The Ming dynasty was the ruling dynasty of China – then known as the Empire of the Great Ming – for 276 years (1368–1644 AD). Founded by Chu Yuan-chang, the rebel leader that was successful in removing the mongols from the throne. Chinese control was re-asserted in China and eastern Asia. Literature became more important, schools were created, and the justice system was reformed. The Ming dynasty is described by some as "one of the greatest eras of orderly government and social stability in human history,” was the last imperial dynasty in China ruled by ethnic Han Chinese. The practice of burying ceramic objects with the deceased went into decline from the 10th to the 14th Century AD. There was a revival in placing miniature representations of glazed terracotta objects such a furniture, food offerings, horses, miniature statues...

20th Century Asian Ceramics

Antique, New and Vintage Asian Ceramics

With their rich and diverse history, antique, new and vintage Asian ceramics offer colorful and sophisticated ways to add flair to any space.

Japanese pottery dates back at least 13,000 years to the Jōmon period. Pieces from the Late Jōmon era display a rope-cord pattern encircling a pot or jug. During the Muromachi period, potters created simple bowls and utensils frequently used in tea ceremonies and were made as both functional and aesthetic objects.

Ceramics made during Japan’s Meiji period, from 1868 to 1912, reflected an explosion of artistic expression propelled by new access to international trade. Details became more intricate and refined, and colors were enhanced with new glazing practices.

Chinese porcelain, meanwhile, is often identified by its shape. Each reign and dynasty had specific shapes and styles that were encouraged by the imperial ruler. During the Song dynasty, for instance, there were four dominant types of ceramic vase shapes: plum-shaped, pear-shaped, cong-shaped (tall and square) and double-gourd.

Chinese ceramics that were made during the Qing dynasty were demonstrative of an expanded artistic expression, with more delicate shapes and a focus on intricate detailing. The shapes of ceramics from this era are thinner, taller and have subtle features like a gentle flare, such as on the mallet-shaped vase.

Later, the 17th- and 18th-century interior design trend of chinoiserie brought Asian paintings and screens, textiles and other art and furniture from the continent into many European homes.

Explore an extensive range of antique, new and vintage Asian ceramics on 1stDibs to find the perfect piece for your home.
