About the Item

Dramatic turned stoneware vase from the studios of Awaji, Japan, featuring a brilliant tri-color translucent glaze (violet, teal and cream) with a delightful crackled finish reminiscent of the Chinese sancai style. The thrown ceramic exterior is in the manner of a manipulated "dripping volcanic" or "crawling volcanic" effect, generous layers of thick medium which are crafted to resemble Japanese Sumida and Chinese Shiwan pottery. The glazed green underside is impressed (see photos) with the Sanpei flag and stamped country of origin with "MADE IN JAPAN" -- the two marks which signify its estimated time of production, circa 1930. Awaji Pottery has got its name after the Japanese island at which it was made during a period of about one hundred years, between 1830 and 1939. Most of the pieces we find are made from the mid 1870s when Awaji began to export its products, to the mid to late 1930s when the last of the kilns closed. Awaji Pottery is usually hand thrown where smaller earlier pieces and application ornaments appear to have been press molded. The body is made of high-fired, white or cream colored clay that borders on stoneware and can vary from pink or buff, to white to grey. The glazes are lead based and often brilliant in tone, typically are translucent and finely crackled. The lead gives the colors brilliance and makes the translucent enamels glassy and often iridescent.

Condition:
Wear consistent with age and use. The glaze may be gaudy on first impression, but the artistry of the glaze and thrown technique used while turning the raw material evokes a beauty unto itself. The interior is only partially, yet artfully, glazed (see photo).
