About the Item

This enameled round dish with 'Arbor' design is decorated with a lady, servants and children by a pond, all dressed in Chinese costumes as perceived by the Europeans. Surrounding this scene are panels containing fruits, flowers and insects against a trellis ground and shell motifs. The reverse with an iron-red and purple lambrequin frieze under the rim. Diameter: 26 cm Height: 3.5 cm. In perfect condition. It is probable that the composition decorating this dish derives from a drawing by the Dutch artist Cornelis Pronk (1691–1759), who is known to have furnished designs to the Dutch East India Company. Pronk’s drawings were widely employed by Chinese porcelain painters as sources of decoration for porcelain intended for export to Europe. Cornelis Pronk (1691-1754), was commissioned by directors of the Dutch East India Company in 1734 to produce designs to be transferred on to Chinese porcelain. C.J.A. Jorg identifies the arbour as Cornelis Pronk's fourth and last official design (drawn in 1737) for the Dutch East India Co., noting that "[because of the high cost of these special patterns]. They ordered a small quantity…" and estimates that just three large arbour dinner services were made in enamel colours (Pronk Porcelain , pp 36-37).
