About the Item

A large and impressive Chinese export famille rose enameled porcelain deep dish or shallow basin, first half of the 18th century, Qing Dynasty, Yongzheng or Qianlong Period, China. The dish of large and gracious proportions, featuring a deep well and wide brim. The center of the well decorated with a large design of floral sprays and blossoming branches. Most prominent are a pair of magnolia blossoms, one in white, the other in a bright pink, fading to white at the edges. Pinks dominate the color palette of this famille rose dish, with green, blue, yellow and white enamels playing supporting roles, all against a luminous white porcelain ground. The cavetto features pink peonies and white lotus against a dense diaper ground with scrolling foliage and reserves of flowering branches with pink blossoms. The wide brim decorated with further large pink magnolia blossoms, scrolling foliage, and fruit. The fruit are quite interesting, consisting of Buddha's hand citron, pomegranate, and peach. Together, this group of fruit is referred to as the Sanduo, or the Three Abundances, symbolizing happiness (citron), fertility (pomegranate), and longevity (peach). Large acanthus leaves have been gilt painted. The brim with further gilding around the edges. The reverse of the dish with a minimal decoration of sprays of lingzhi, the fungus of immortality, painted in iron red. A "Nathan Bentz, Collector of Asian Art, Santa Barbara" collection sticker to the reverse. Nathan Bentz was a prominent dealer of Asian art based in Santa Barbara, and later San Francisco, in the first half of the 20th century. His gallery closed in 1945.
