Chinese Porcelain Canton Vase Reduced to Make Potpourri Urn with Bird Top, Qing

About the Item

This is a very decorative Chinese export, (Canton) porcelain, hand painted, Rose Mandarin vase which has been reduced in height to make a Potpourri vase or urn having a copper and brass ring top with a bird, which we date to the early 19th century, Qing dynasty. The porcelain vase has a broad based baluster shape and is embellished with two gilded Foo dogs and four salamanders to the shoulder of the vase. The vase would originally have been taller and it has been reduced in height at some period in its life and then fitted with a copper cylinder ring and vented top surmounted by a brass bird. This modification makes a very good Potpourri vase or urn which is both practical and decorative. The vase has been beautifully hand painted in a Rose Mandarin pattern with different panels showing different figural groups, outside of which are further painted flowers and groups of precious things with a border pattern around the base. The painting is particularly good. Notes: We date the vase to very early in the 19th century. We acquired this piece as is and the modifications have not been done by us. We consider the top of the vase was possibly damaged at some stage in its life and then the vase was shortened in height to accommodate the metal ring fittings to its top which we also date to the 19th century. The copper ring is a good tight push fit around the top of the vase. We consider the conversion of the piece to a Potpourri vase or urn to be well done and the whole item makes a very decorative and unusual piece with the benefit of excellent hand painted detail.
