Chinese Tang Dynasty Earth Spirit

About the Item

This beautiful Tang dynasty earth spirit with human face and animal body is crafted with terracotta and paint. This semi-human spirit figure is seated on its haunches with cloven hooves planted firmly on the base. Wearing conical mandarin style hats, their face peering upward with a placid facial expression. Traces of original pigment are still intact. The earth spirits have been believed to protect the living by keeping the spirits of the dead from inappropriately roaming the world outside the tomb.
