Japanese Antique Ancient Sueki Sue Ware Wabi-Sabi Pottery Vase Pot Vessel

About the Item

A wonderful, unique, and handcrafted piece of ancient Japanese Sueki Sue ware pottery dating back to the 500-600s (6th-7th century). Sueki/ Sue pottery was a blue-gray form of stoneware pottery fired at high temperatures. It was produced in Japan and southern Korea during the Kofun, Nara, and Heian periods of Japanese history. It was initially used for funerary and ritual objects usually buried in the graves of high-ranking and powerful dignitaries/people. The shape of this piece would have imitated bronze pieces imported from China at the time. This particular piece also encompasses the Japanese Wabi-Sabi aesthetic - the appreciation of beauty that is imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete in nature and embraces the principles of asymmetry, roughness, simplicity, economy, austerity, modesty, intimacy, and the appreciation of both natural objects and the forces of nature upon them. From a prominent San Francisco Japanese/ Asian pottery and art collection (the previous owner worked with the San Francisco opera for some 40 years). Beautiful piece and nearly completely intact for a work of this age. Would clearly be a great addition to any ancient Japanese or Asian artifacts or pottery/ ceramics collection or eye-catching stand-alone accent piece (perhaps a nice Ikebana vase) in about any setting.
