Japanese Kinrande Imari Octagonal Zodiac Bowl, Taisho Period, Japan

About the Item

A striking Japanese kinrande type Imari porcelain octagonal "fukuju" bowl with zodiac images, Taisho period, early 20th century, circa 1915, Japan. The octagonal bowl features a short ring foot and high walls with a slightly everted rim. The bowl is elaborately and densely decorated in underglaze blue, overglaze enamels, and fine gilt painting. The exterior of the bowl decorated with twelve roundels of iron red and underglaze blue set against a dense black ground finely painted in gilt with scrolling peony. Each rondel features an animal of the zodiac. Interestingly, some are expressed as images of the animal, while others are expressed as the character. A black ground border above with alternating reserves of "fukuju" (happiness and longevity) and peony blossoms. A border below with stylized lotus petals in underglaze blue and a scrolling floral and foliate design in overglaze iron red. The interior of the bowl is also highly decorated. The center of the well features a large black ground roundel painted in gilt with a dense scrolling peony design. Two large reserves in the shape of uchiwa fan shape, one featuring a tiger prowling amongst a rocky outcrop and bamboo, the other featuring a crouching shishi besides a waterfall. The interior sides with alternating panels of phoenixes and dragons in bright overglaze enamels and gilt reserved against an iron red ground. A wide border to the top rather alternating "fuku" (happiness) and "ju" (longevity) characters against a black ground with scrolling peony in gilt. The underside marked in a recessed circular reserve with the "fuku" mark within a double square in underglaze blue, and a four character mark in overglaze black painted on top.

Wear consistent with age and use. Minor fading. In very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or repairs noted. Light wear and rubbing to the gilding. The raised blue enamels with some minor glaze pops from the firing.

A large and impressive Japanese Imari porcelain fluted charger with scalloped rim, signed Kaji(chu?), Edo to Meiji Period, mid 19th century, Japan. The magnificent Japanese Imari charger measures 25" in diameter, and is decorated in the typical imari palette of underglaze blue with overglaze red, orange, blue, and green enamels with gilt highlights. The large charger also features fluted sides and a scalloped gilt rim. The design of the charger is centered on a central floral medallion with three large chrysanthemum blossoms and vegetal scrolls. Radiating out from the central medallion are various brocade patterned sections that roughly follow the shape of the fluting. Some larger sections feature images of cranes and minogame (turtles with long tails), both symbols of longevity, while other feature dragons and phoenix, symbols of authority and power.
