Japanese Contemporary Yellow Platinum Gold Porcelain Vase by Master Artist
About the Item
Exquisite contemporary large Japanese museum-quality award-winning porcelain deep charger in vivid yellow, adorned with etchings in a complicated pattern features silver foil in platinum, gold and a beautiful combination of multiple colors, meticulously positioned using lacquer as an adhesive and sealed to the vase in a low-temperature firing process. The combination of all the colors expressed on a complicatedly etched surface creates an unpredictable and ever shifting display of light and color. This is a masterpiece by a third generation master of a kiln located in the Imari-Arita region of southern Japan who is the descendant of an extended family of prolific porcelain and ceramic artists.
The kiln started in the 19th century with traditional kinrande techniques (gold enameled porcelain), but in accordance with the philosophy of the kiln’s founder, each subsequent generation pioneered in a field of the master’s choosing. Thus, the second generation is known for its yuri-kinsai (gold foil underglaze) and the third generation for its haku-yui (intertwining of precious-metal foils).
The three generations of the Kosan Kiln located in the Imari-Arita region of southern Japan have been experimenting and perfecting techniques featuring gold foil for seven decades. Inspired by centuries-old kinrande (gold enameled porcelain) styles of Imari, the artists have developed a technique known as haku-
yui (braided foils) that combines gold, platinum and silver foils to create a shimmering palette of light and color.
In this mesmerizing charger the artist has used silver based foils for expressing a combination of colors and fine outlines in bright yellow to create a dazzling pattern appearing throughout the body of this piece.
Silver foil is used exclusively as a substrate for expressing a wide spectrum of vivid colors. Foils of differing material and color or a combination of them are applied separately and at the rate of “one shade per day” in a process reminiscent of multi-color woodblock printing, implying that the addition of each new shade exponentially increases the time and complexity of production.
Yuri-kinsai was termed in the 1950s as a new glazing technique. The main feature is a highly transparent overglaze on the gilded porcelain, cutting out stencils of gold foil for underglaze decorations.
This elegant decorative porcelain charger comes in a custom made wooden case signed by the artist.

A Massive Antique Japanese Arita Porcelain Plate by Kajiwara Kiln
Located in Atlanta, GA
On offer is a truly impressive blue and white porcelain plate of Hizen ware, from Arita in Japan, circa mid to late-19th century. The plate was made by Kajiwara Kikujiro (菊次郎, the second Kiku son) and/or Kajiwara Kikusaburo (菊三郎, the third Kiku son who died in 1883) of the Kajiware Family Kiln of in Arita. It was decorated in a superb design with blue under-glaze, clearly out of a hand of a master. In a Classic Japanese composition that was popular in the Meiji Period, the plate displays a riot of auspicious elements, arranged still in a surprisingly harmonious manner. Anchoring the center of the design is an eagle perched on the branch of a blooming cherry tree, its talons clenching the bark and its wings about to open. The motion of the its immediate taking off is palpable. The trunk and the branches of the old cherry tree provide a spacial frame for the arrangement of large peonies with foliage, bundles of chrysanthemums, Chinese bell...
