Kenjo Imari Ewer & Cover, Arita, Japan, circa 1700, Genroku Period

About the Item

A fine Japanese porcelain Kenjo Imari ewer and cover, Arita, c. 1700, Genroku Period. The squared pot, painted with large panels of pavilions, in river landscapes, beneath cloud scrolls, either side of panels of sylised flowering plants, and divided by canted corners, of flowering iris. Having a stub spout, painted with gilt petals. The top of the ewer is painted with a complex textile motif, inset with four underglaze blue roundels representing good fortune. Centered by a large moulded chrysanthemum, in iron red and gilt, surmounted by a similarly decorated cover. Having a large overhead handle, painted in gilt with karakusa scroll, terminating at the body of the pot, with gilt, moulded chrysanthemum. Height– 13.5 cm, 5 3/8”. Width– 14 cm, 5 1/2”. Depth– 7.5 cm, 2 7/8”. Condition: Minute chip to the underside of the cover repaired. Otherwise excellent condition.
