Korean White Ceramic Brush Holder Joseon Dynasty
About the Item
A lovely Korean white porcelain brush holder with carved relief design from late Joseon dynasty (circa 19th century). The brushpot is highlighted with one of the most beloved motifs in Korea, a crouched tiger (Ho). Low relief carving was used to create the folky imagery. The dimensional effect was then enhanced by the skillful thinning of the white glaze to reveal the darker color of the natural clay underneath. The tiger, with a clandestine smile on the face and an upturned tail, crouches under a large pine tree. Clusters of rocks scatter nearby, completing the wild forest setting. Often seen on the folk-art painting, the tiger and pine trees are auspicious symbols to ward off evil, protect the family and bring in prosperity.
Cherished by the scholars, this brushpot would grace the desk of the man's study.
The brush holder was from a Japanese collection and comes with a later wood storage box Tomobako.
A brush holder with a very similar tiger motif is in the collection of the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, Japan. Acc no 21475. It is illustrated pate 42 on page 129 of the book "Korean Ceramics from the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka"
