20th Century Japanese Tokyo Tansu Chest in Two Parts

About the Item

This 20th-century Japanese Tokyo Tansu chest for clothing produced at the beginning of the Taisho period it’s an example of furniture characteristic of this period in Japan and in vogue for its simple forms and versatility. Composed of cypress wood in its inner parts and Paulownia wood for the doors and outer parts. It consists of three drawers, running the entire length and a shorter one. In the lower part on the right side are two smaller drawers. The cabinet can be divided into two parts and it’s easily transported thanks to the side handles that make it handy and practical at the same time. These handles are rectangular in shape (kaku in Japanese). This portability allowed the Tansu to be easily moved to different rooms or even to travel outside the home. It also allowed for quick removal in case of fire, which was common. The metal corner braces, which are so attractive to the eye, gave much support to the relatively lightweight wood. The frontal iron inserts are a lockplates very common decorations in that period.
