Early 19th Century French Empire "Bureau a Gradin" Desk

About the Item

The rectangular superstructure centred by two drawers above two shelves, flanked by an pair of cupboard doors flanked and separated by patinated and gilt bronze caryatids, the lower part with a leather lined writing slide above three drawers around a slight kneehole each side fitted with a writing slide raised on square supports joined by stretchers and fitted at the front with painted and parcel gilt wood female torsos continuing to leaf carved paw feet. This same desk was featured in a Sotheby's New York Auction titled "Highly Important French Furniture Decorations and Ceramics" lot 359 with an auction estimate range of $40000 to $60000. So pricing here is bargain basement reason beingthere there has been little to no interest in the desk from my clients. The design of the desk might have been inspired by a similar desk/cartonier made by Thomire for Napoleon and which is displayed in Malmaison. A photo of this desk in Malmaison is included with the accompany photo portfolio.
